NWR: the HPV vaccine

Original post by tricia3381

so i went to my gyno today to switch to yaz and she suggested i get the HPV vaccine. she said as long as i start the getting the vaccines (theres 3) while i'm 26 i'm eligible to get it. she gave me some paperwork on it and stuff, but i'm just not sure. i talked to my dad about it and he said i should get it. Even if nothing ever happens between FH and I, hes like theres always a chance (god forbid) that i could get rapped.
has anyone gotten it? or thinking about getting it?

I'm 33, and I got it. My dr. gave it to me; insurance does not cover it; I sucked it up and paid out of pocket. You get it 3 times.
Once, than once, two months later ,a nd then again 4 months later.

I got it. My mom was really pushing me to get it - and she was willing to lay out ALL the money if my insurance wouldnt cover it.

I got one shot already - and my insurance ended up covering it!!!! I have 2 more shots to go!!!

The nurse at the dr's office was surprised to see that my insurance covered it - I have Aetna (PPO). Little by little, insurance's are starting to cover the vaccine. The maximum age limit is 27 - but you have to have at least one shot by the age of 26

Really they gave it to you even though you are 33, bc every doctor and everthing you read about it says you have to be under 27 or else it doesnt work

There are several strains of HPV. If you have some strains, and not others, the shots will protect you from the strains you don't yet have, regardless of age.
It will work at every age, but insurance only covers you until age 26 b/c it is meant as a preventative, not a cure.

the risk is higher when your under 26 b/c you're still growing, have more potential partners, etc. The dr. feels that if you are not at HIGH RISK (single) its not worth it.

Before taking it, you take the HPV test. Its a new new test, that only came out 6 months ago. If you've been to the gyno in 6 months, they should have offered it. If you test positive for HPV, you might consider the shot. If not, then don't.

It's not without research--it wouldn't be on the market if there wasn't solid research. The FDA would have never approved it. However, the data collected from the relatively small numbers of people in clinical trials is nothing compared to the data that comes out from a drug or vaccine being on the market. It's like Vioxx--the sample was too small when it was being tested to know that it caused heart problems. OTOH, a vaccine is not the same thing as a drug. They're less risky. There have been vaccines taken off the market because they don't really work--the one for cholera, for example. But I don't think a vaccine has been taken off the market because it was actively dangerous, not for a long, long time, anyway, as science has learned how to make better vaccines.

I am like you, actually, I'm cautious and don't like new drugs if I can avoid them. But a vaccine is different. However, you're married, you're low risk, so you don't need to worry about it.
