NWR: Tipping at Nail Salon

Original post by Almostawife

I know typically you are not suppose to tip the owner of a beauty salon. I was wondering how many of you get your nails done in a Korean Nail salon and if the owner does your nails, do you tip? Does she/he take the tip?

i tip if they are the owner or if they arent, the nail salon i go to, sometimes the owner does my nails and he accepts my tips. it really doesnt matter to me if hes the owner or not to be honest, i would feel bad if i didnt tip someone who just did my nails

my eyebrows i tip $3, it costs $6
nails i tip $7 , it cost 15
and my hair i tip at least $10, and the price varies on what i get

Here is the scoop on why salon OWNERS usually won't accept tips and it might even be an insult

technically hairdressers, florists, dj, waitresses, etc. if they don't own the business have to figure tips into their salary because they actually can be paid below minimum wage because the state looks at their tips as income. They are also considered 'servants', legally, and hence work for someone who makes money off of them.

The owner makes money on the business and on each servant that works for him/her and makes way above what their 'servants' make and it was seen as a sort of elitness and to be offered a tip, like a servant would be considered insulting.

Does this make sense?

So the only reason I asked is because I have always tipped and she accepted my tips when most other owners won't and find it a little embarrassing.

Not always true, i know owners and some dont make more money, i have said it a million times on here and will say it again although i feel like im always repeating myself lol but it goes with my point. My mom has owned quite a few salons and doesnt mean you are making more than your employees. All her salons were in the city, so the rent is insane. As an employee at a salon you usually can get about 60% of the service you just provided. Some salons work different and some get a salary and commission, depends on the salon. As an owner, lets not forget that before it even opened up you had to put alot of money into it, many had loans to take out so they are paying that off in the beginning. Rent is not cheap, plus you have to pay the phone bill, electric bill. You have to buy supplies, and this can be done VERY often, more so in a hair salon. You pay for advertisement, then you have other workers there that you have to pay but you dont get a portion of what they make, such as receptionists, some places have several of them. Then some salons hire a cleaning person, not all though i see this mostly in hair salons. As an employee you get to keep what you make. As an owner alot of it has to go back into the business itself.

I know one salon owner who put SO much money into her place and is seriously about to go broke bc the loan to open her place cost so much, so all that shes making now is to pay it off. The salon is in the city so the rent is so high. I also worked at a hair salon many years ago, and ill say it was one of those big known salons that celebrities went to. First it was a partnership, the stylist whose name was on the salon left and then his partner took full ownership. The rent was $20,000 a month. The business went down a bit after the stylist left bc he was the known one and everybody used to go there for him. Still had about 200 clients a day but with $20,000 a month rent, and then not to mention all the products that he had to buy every single month. Pay all the receptionists, the manager, the assistant manager whom he didnt get a portion of their salary from. IT was alot of money he had to shell out EVERY single month. You have to figure at least $30,000 a month he had to give and thats low balling it, so imagine how much he would personally have to make just to make anything for himself.

So my point was just about the whole ' an owner makes way above what his/her employees make' Ive seen quite a few salons where the owner was making less than the employees.

in todays age, i dont think any owner looks at its employees as a 'servant' and dont think any customers look at it that way either
