Does anyone know anything about ordering a new tivo? My FH has one, but it has not been working that great lately. He keeps mentioning that when we find a house, he will buy a new (better) one. I thought since it reboots literally every half an hour (which is quite annoying!), I would buy him one for Christmas. Can I purchase one when he already has a subscription? I tried to look on their website, but everything had the subscription attached. Do I have to call them? Will I need his subscription information or can he hook it up after I have purchased it? Thanks in advance for any help!

Re: NWR - TiVO
If you have Cable, get the DVR box through them. It works great and is so much more user-friendly than TiVo! It's cheaper, too.

I agree, but if you do decide to purchase a new box you should be able to get one at Best Buy or Circuit City.

What about buying it at Best Buy? When I bought FH one, I had to buy the subscription separately.

I didn't even know I could get them there! That would be even better! Thank you!

Would I be able to order the DVR without subscribing? (I would rather leave that up to him) You could just cancel the Tivo? Sorry I know nothing about any of this! The only thing that concerns me is that we might be moving once we get married out of our current cable network's area so it would be easier to take the Tivo with us than have to buy a new DVR, right?

You don't buy the DVR box through the cable company - it's your cable box that comes with your subscription!
You just return it when you move as you would any other cable box and you'd get a new one when you move.

OOOOOHHH!!! That seems much easier!!! So maybe I'll look up different subscriptions and buy that for him instead! I wonder why he doesn't do that to begin with!?
Thanks for all your help girls!!!

Re: NWR - TiVO
we have both, and i have to say, TIVO is annoying cause if the power goes out, and the cable box turns off, your show wont record.
the cable DVR box will record on or off. but it is soooooooooooooooooooo freaking loud. It boots in the middle of the night, even when its off. Plus when you are watching tv it makes alot of noise TIVO is silent but there is a delay in switching channels because it coinsides with your cable box and its highly annoying

I'd call Cablevision. That's not supposed to happen. My DVR box is absolutely silent. I've had two (b/c I moved and had to get a new box) and neither made ANY noise.
You may need a new box.

Definitely call them!
I don't have ANY problems with the box being loud at all. Granted, it's not in our bedroom, but I'd notice if it were making noise... That would drive me nuts, too!
Are you sure it's not interfering with your cell phone or anything else?
I'd definitely call, though - Mine is silent!

Re: NWR - TiVO
Okay, this is something I'm an expert on.
I've had my TiVo for almost 3 years, and about 13 months after I got it, the hard drive failed. That's what's happening to yours; give it a few weeks, it'll be totally dead. I called TiVo about it because I'd bought a lifetime subscription for $300, and they were like, 'too bad for you! Hahahaha, you should have bought the monthly subscription - you just wasted $200 paying for service you'll never get! So stupid!' Well, I'm paraphrasing, but that was basically it.
So, i went around them and bought a new hard drive for my TiVo (from an independent company) and it was great - easy to install, and it had 140 hours of memory. So that was really nice... until it died 6 months later. Now, this time I'd bought the warranty, so fine, I got the hard drive replaced and all was good... until 2 weeks ago when the box broke again. This time something was wrong with whatever causes it to get its power supply. Again, we called TiVo and they said they could replace our box and we could keep our lifetime subscription, for $150.
Now, I'd only owned TiVo for 3 years, and in that span it broke 3 times, and between the box, the subscription, and the repairs, it cost me about $600. Don't get me wrong, I love TiVo, but the Cable DVR is just so much less hassle. You go switch your cable box for the DVR box at any of their offices (don't forget to bring your remote too) and it's an extra $10 on top of your cable bill, end of story. And if the box breaks, it's their property, not yours, so they just replace it for you. It doesn't have a cute logo or make fun sounds, but it does tape shows on 2 different channels at the same time, and is totally hassle-free. Get the DVR cable box.

Wow! Thanks! I hope he didn't get the lifetime subscription...oh well if the DVR is that much better it might be worth the money that is already out the door!
