Girls, Maybe you can help me out. Me and FH currently live in Manhattan but FH wants to move to the 'burbs. Looks like he is going to win this battle due to the outrageous prices to buy in the city. I grew up in Suffolk but I feel like I don't really know Nassau that well.....
We are looking for a town that has a nice 'downtown' area and is a younger scene (we are both in our early 30's). We are looking for a town that has some type of social scene with restaurants, shops, etc. Also, FH hates houses that are close together, so it would have to be a town that the houses have a bit of property
Lastly, the town has to be no more than 45 min train ride from the city and easy access to the train line.
Oh, towns other than Huntington or Long Beach. Each have been eliminated due to one reason or another....
Any thoughts???

Re: NWR: Towns in Nassau
Rockville Centre definitely... although the houses are pricey, but the downtown is awesome.... lots of good shopping, bars and eats... it's the first stop on the train after woodside on the babylon line.
I also like garden city (also pricey though...)

Re: NWR: Towns in Nassau
My friend at work and I were just talking about this. He lives in Rockville Centre and he said it is such a great town, for young people. He is trying to get my FH and I to move there. Bars, Shops, everything is a hop, skip and a jump away.

Rockville Centre. It's only 37 minutes by train. I know this b/c I am also looking for a nice town in Nassau County that can get us into the city in under 45 minutes so I am constantly on realtors websites and the LIRR site to see the towns train schedule. The house prices are outrageous but everyone that lives there seems to love it. Also, the school district is top notch but you have to make sure the house is actually in RC school district b/c some parts of RC centre are assigned to different schools, or so I've heard. I don't thinks those other schools are bad or anything but some people bought their homes believing they were in RC district and learned that they were not. The taxes are also really high (RC village taxes as well as Nassau taxes) but there is some deal i keep hearing about RC utilities whichs are cheaper than the average. I am not sure but you should look into that. Good Luck.

Or....Someone at work suggested South Orange in NJ as an option. That town is in Essex County and its 35 minutes by train to Penn. I checked the houses for sale on the nytimes.com and the prices are far more reasonable than Nassau or Rockville Centre. The houses are really nice too.

Re: NWR: Towns in Nassau
these are great suggestions....I didn't even think of Rockville Centre! I did a quick search and yes, the prices seem to be a bit high but I def. want to keep it open as an option.
Yes, I have a few friends that live near South Orange in NJ (Monclair, Maplewood, Livingston). I think you do get more house for your $$ but I think the taxes are even higher than in LI.
Any other suggestions?

Farmingdale has a nice town and there is a college near by so you'll always get a younger crowd.
