tomorrow it looks like I may have to put the family dog to sleep He became suddenly sick last Thursday, they admitted him to the vet & put him on antibiotic & sugarwater ivs, took chest xrays, sonograms, blood and all came back that he had possible cancer. We took him to a diff vet Monday to get her take on things, and it was confirmed by the tests, his behavior, and a retnal hemorrage that he has cancer throughout his body. He was sent home on steriods to better his quality of life and make him feel better. I've been on top of him about eating, drinking, everything, but unfortunately today he's taken a turn for the worse and is having a really hard time breathing. So unfortunately it looks like I mite have to help him pass over peacefully tomorrow instead of suffer any longer. I really hate having to make this decision and do this to him... I know I'm helping him, although I feel like I'm sort of betraying him. This is such a horrible sucky position to be in. I hate doing this to him, but I hate seeing him and think he's suffering. So anyway if you could, as stupid as this may sound, send a little prayer for him that he goes peacefully.
Has anyone had to do this before? I can't even imagine what tomorrow is going to be like.

Re: NWR ugh
I am so sad for you. We had to put my dog to sleep when I was heading to college and it was so hard...but it does sound like it will take away the dog being in pain. I'm so sorry. Hang in there.

I am so so sorry for you.I had the exact same thing happen to me and I feel your pain.My beloved Sammie was diagnosed with cancer and I had to make the same decision as to when...he kept getting his ups and downs and it was an emotional roller coaster.I would make the appointment then he would be better,so I would cancel.I felt guilty thinking about putting him to sleep and I felt guilty thinking that he may be in a lot of pain.He stayed strong for a while and then he took a bad turn and helped ease my guilt/pain when,as sick as he was, he walked himself into the emergency clinic(and he feared the smell of any vets office his whole life, and usually he headed for the door). That day he marched himself right into the room and just looked at me as if to say 'Hey Mom it's okay ,I am ready' as crazy as it may sound... My thoughts and prayers are with you..FM me if you want to talk.

I'm so sorry.. I had to do the same in February with my dog. Once you give them every chance, sometimes it's only best for them to put them down. I'm so so sorry as I know a pet is like a family member.

Re: NWR ugh
this brings back sad memories of my family dog. He was probably 14 when he got sick and began internally bleeding. It was really hard to put him to sleep. I wasn't there, but my mother said that she was able to sit beside him and stroke his head when they gave him the shot. She said that it was very peaceful. I got home from school and was just heart broken (even though I knew it had to happen). A part of me was so glad though, because he was in a lot of pain. It was just so much better this way, rather than prolonging it.
I'm sorry you have to feel this pain. I know it hurts. Nobody would be able to understand that unless they also have loved a dog. Everything's going to be okay though. Soon he'll be at peace & never feel pain again
