NWR: Vent

NWR: Vent

So the house we want to buy needs a lot of work and I mean every corner of the house needs work.

I'm on the fence about it, but feel pressured by FH.

Its in a great neighborhood. fine. but i feel like he thinks we can only move to this one town and everything else on long island is pretty much no good.

feeling stressed, and he pretty much expects me to be happy about it and i'm just not.

I don't know what to do. but if i go against it, i will be the bad guy. help

FH and I are going through this right now. I don't mind buying a home that needs some work to make it our home. FH thinks we are going to buy something that doesn't need any work at all. I guess he won the lottery and forgot to tell me.

I'm talking major stuff, so far it needs a new roof, kitchen, heating, electrical service, and that's just the beginning of it

OH Lord, I hope this house is like CHEAP!! I'll be honest, my FH is not handy that's why he does not want a house with lots of baggage. All of that right there would have me running for the hills. Is it a short sale or a foreclosure, by any chance?

Pass on it. You'll be a slave to it and end up hating it. This is my life. Btw heating and elec are expensive. Im talking 5-6 grand easily.

You can find way better!!! East Islip is an amazing area, you are right about that, but it's not worth it. (IMO) You will drop another $100,000 (at least) on everything else.

Did you do a home inspection? A mortgage co may not even give you a mortgage if it has major problems. I had that problem years ago when originally looking. I bought mine in 96 and its nowhere near done. Pass pass pass.

We did the inspection today. The guy said it needs a lot of work.

I know if i say no i'm gonna wind up being the bad guy forever.

its a great house, i will give you that. its just been terribly neglected and everything in it is stuck in the 70's if you get my drift.

You haven't seen the 70's until you come to my apartment. I have the wallpaper to prove it.

OMG. It's so hideous, I can't wait til we are out of this place. We only stay because it is dirt cheap.

You won't be the bad guy. This is a buyer's market right now. You will find something may better if that's the price you are looking at.

Theres a big for needing updating and replacing a heating and elec system. Hows the roof? I know he wants that house but do you have 50-100k extra to put into it?

I think if you'r ereasonably open about finding a house that might need a minimla to moderate amount of work, then he should understand if you're uneasy about a particular house. Go with your gut to a degree, after you weight the pros and cons with some reason.

What kind of work does the house need? Is it mostly cosmetic?

Thanks girls for all the advice

We're going to walk away from it, nothing lost.

you'll definitely be able to find something better with little to no work. You want to be able to enjoy your home, not dread having to fix everything. You home is out there!!!

IDK, personally I'd pass. We bought a house and you THINK 'oh, we can do that, or this' BUT everything takes soo much time. We bought our house and it took us a month to move in. We painted the entire house, and had the ENTIRE heating system replaced!. THEN later we found some old termite damage that needed redone. In the end everything was great but it adds up and is a lot of work.

I'm sure you can find other houses in that price range... how you check out other houses? You have to ask yourself is it 'THE' house? or just a house you like in your price range?

Best of luck... let us know what you decide.

Re: NWR: Vent

ummm I'm completely in your shoes! FH and I wanted one particular neighborhood and so we waited forever to find a house in our price range. When we found one, we loved everything about it: the location, the size, the neighborhood but it needed ALOT of work. The previous tenants were very old people who lived there like their whole lives.

Very outdated!

We went through with it because of the potential but I will warn you now that it's WAY more money than you think it will cost. You will undoubtedly run behind schedule. And if you work 10 hour days like we do, the progress will be slow.

I feel really drained by the process and have lashed out at FH plenty of times because we are doing most of the work ourselves and it SUUUUCKS. Lol, I'm not a friggin carpentar!

It would've been easier to get a house all ready for us, for sure, but the cool part is that we get to pick EVERYTHING to suit our taste. And I like to do work on the house with our future kids in mind. It'll be cool to show them the work we've done.

It's def not easy though and I wish we weren't doing this as we also plan for a wedding but i know it'll be worth it in the end!

eta: NEVER go along with something because you don't want to be a bad guy! I am guilty of this all the time and it makes me regret it and be resentful!

FH and I went through the same thing with a house in East Rockaway. It looked really nice to us but once we brought our fathers their they were like 'This house need A LOT of work!' It ****** bc we were so excited but it wasn't worth it because we would be broke for a LONG time fixing up that house. We looked at houses a little more but ended up buying a co-op. Good luck with everything and don't get discouraged!!!

Thanks girls always so helpful

We walked away from it. I saw it as nothing but a complete drain of our money ( we also have a wedding) and too much misery to deal with our first year of marriage.

if we don't find anything my january we're just going to move into a garden appt, which is a very nice idea
