NWR: What are your thoughts about unions?

I know this has the potential to be controversial, but I'm taking a class on Labor Law this semester and it's opened my eyes to a lot of things I never really thought about before.

I also noticed now that the school district when I grew up was the '______ Union-Free School District' which I never really thought about in the past

I'll admit I still am not all that knowledgeable in this area but I am really interested to hear some of the different perspectives, now that I at least have the context of a few weeks of classes.

Please dont let this spiral out of control (I'm sure people feel strongly on each side)

I am completely for unions - my father was a city union local president and every job I was in had a strong union presence. I do feel in certain instances they become like a 'gang' and bully the union's priorities instead of the worker's need.

I am for unions. ALthough sometimes I think they should be a bit more strict when it comes to certain things. Everybody always says how you could get away with alot bc they wont fire you. I think this sometimes can encourage people to slack off. OF course not everybody, i know alot of very hard working union people. But everytime I hear that statement, I can't help but think that.

FYI: Link to thread on LIF about Union-Free School Districts

Union free school district mean that it's not joined with another district.

The word Union in terms of the district name has NOTHING to do with the teacher's union it has to do with whether or not it is a consolidated school district

My father is a Local 3 electrician... I bleed lightning bolts.

I'm all for them.

Americans owe a debt of gratitude to the unions w/o which we would not have vacations or the 40 hour work week

Re: NWR: What are your thoughts about unions?

I will only work union jobs. I was in RWDSU local 338 when I worked in a supermarket AND I am currently in AFGE for government employees.

I feel like I am always telling this story but it has such a huge impact on my life. My father worked for Anchor Savings Bank for 30 years. They decided they didn't want him so after he couldnt meet some BS life insurance quotas, he got laid off. After THIRTY years, they got rid of him. It totally changed our lives and we went from being very comfortable to basically not knowing if we could keep our home. So, when I saw that I KNEW that I could only work at a place where a union could offer protection. If my dad was union, they would have definitely cried age discrimination AND today 15 years later our lives would be totally different.

I'm pro-union all the way. I come from a long line of blue-collar union workers.

My Dad was a teacher before he retired, and was a member of the teacher unions.

My FIL has been an iron worker since he graduated high school.

I'm sure this is a naive question, but I'm not 100% sure what the big negative is about unions?
