NWR: what car do you recommend

Original post by samnjenna

My DH and I *might* be moving and if we do I will need a car. I have NEVER owned a car (Queens girl) and I am terrified about buying one. DH knows a lot about cars and thinks we should get one used and just wants me to think about what style of car I like. I don't even know where to begin.

Any advise?

Any brands I should stay away from?

Why do you like your car?

TIA

i have a hybrid suv - it gets good gas ilage for an suv

the cars get great gas milage and there is a tax deduction if you buy instead of lease

you pay more and it takes a while for it better gas mileage to pay for it self

but if you want to help the enviroment it is worth it

i have a lexus (same system as toyota) - and really like it

honda has a good system for the accord

Jeep!

I had a jeep liberty for 3 years on a lease (loved it!) and just gave it back and got the new jeep grand cherokee laredo last week! It's amazing!!!

ETA: My sister had a volkswagon jetta and had SO many problems with it. Others I know love the jetta though.

I agree with the Jetta having problems- stay away from it...I had a 03 Jetta and had transmission problems not even a year and half after I bought it...not to mention all the other things that went wrong with it - and I keep my cars in great condition - this car just fell apart as the days went on...we got rid of it before the warranty expired - so happy we did...we ended up getting the new Jeep Commander - it's great, I also recommend anything Honda or Nissan - I had an Altima and it was great

I'm sorry to go against Kathleen & Cali, but I have a VW Jetta & absolutely love it. It's a tough car, it gets good mileage and we haven't had one problem with it. It's a 2003.

I 2nd the Toyotas too....great cars

Absolutely do not get a Volkswagon!!! It was the worst mistake I ever made....I have an '02 Golf and have had nothing but problems since practically Day 1!

I totally agree!!!! I have the 2001 VW Passat>>> Let's just say it isn't very reliable!!! Go with a Toyota or Honda...much better choice.

Nissan! I love my Maxima and my FH has had the pathfinder, Murano and Titan. His mom has the Altima. We are clearly Nissan people and we love them!

I also say Nissan! We are nissan people too, my parents got a nissan maxima in 92 and sold it and bought another maxima, FH parents own a maxima too. Great cars! My sister and best friend have the altima and I have the new xterra, which I love!

Re: NWR: what car do you recommend

I would recommend the Mini Cooper. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my car. She is too cute and gets amazing gas mileage, alittle over 30 miles a gallon.
I drove to Boston and back to LI on ONE tank of gas and I still had alittle less then a quarter tank left. The service is amazing..BMW is the dealer so you are treated so well when it's time for service ..I get a BMW loaner whenever my car gets serviced and they send someone to my house all the way from Southhampton,(where I bought it in 2003), to pick up the Mini and drop off the loaner.(I live in Nassau County) It is awesome. I have had no issues with the car I have only had regular service. It is perfect for a couple and is surprisingly bigger then most people think on the inside. It will even work for me if I have a child or two.
My brother ended up getting the new MINI convertable and he also loves it.

I had a toyota camry for YEARS and it was such a great car. My mom bought it in 1987, then I drove it from 1997 to 2001. It still lasted another 2 years after that !!! Now I have a honda civic, it is a 2000 and knock on wood, I have had no trouble at all with it, and it's easy to park !!

I agree. I have a 99 and 06 VW Jetta and love them.
No problems at all......knock on wood.
Our 99 has over 150,000 and rides like it's brand new, that's why we bought another one.

Re: NWR: what car do you recommend

I HAD a honda civic and it was awesome on gas, never had any transmission problems and had an excellent safety rating! I recently sold it because I got a company car and I miss it dearly! But since I left that job I had to get a new car...so now I have a Nissan Altima and I really like it, not as good on gas as the Honda but that's only because it's alot bigger. I don't like the shape of the new '06 civics, so spring for the Accord.
