NWR: what car do you recommend

My DH and I *might* be moving and if we do I will need a car. I have NEVER owned a car (Queens girl) and I am terrified about buying one. DH knows a lot about cars and thinks we should get one used and just wants me to think about what style of car I like. I don't even know where to begin.

Any advise?

Any brands I should stay away from?

Why do you like your car?

TIA

Anything from Honda or my second choice Toyota.

ETA: Reason being they're reliable.

Re: NWR: what car do you recommend

I have a Toyota Solara and absolutely love it. It's great on gas and has been nothing but absolutely reliable and I've had it since 2001. The amount of maintenance (aside from the standard stuff) has been very minimal. Plus it's fun and sporty, but still a very solid and safe car. I will only ever have Toyotas in my future!!!

Re: NWR: what car do you recommend

I have a Toyota Matrix, I am happy with it. I like it because its reliable, gets good gas mileage and also is very roomy- which has been very helpful with moving.

I love my Honda.

Definitely look into Hybrids, you get a tax deduction for buying one.

Re: NWR: what car do you recommend

I'm a Honda girl. I have my eye on a new accord (our cars right now are 9 and 10 and now that we're in the suburbs... it's about time!)

ETA: Those 9 and 10 year old cars are a Honda Civic and a Toyota Corolla so it backs up everyone else's posts!

Honda's are great cars. The 4 cylinder Accord is great on gas, but not too small.

Have you thought about getting one of those hybrids? They're supposed to be awesome and a great run for your money on gas...

Re: NWR: what car do you recommend

My mom is on her second Camary and it is a fantastic car. THe gas mileage is great, and there has been no problems with either car.
They just came out with a new model, it is really nice.

I was considering a Ford Escape. I test drove one the other day and really liked it. It felt like I was driving a car not a sport Utility. It was fast too.
Ford also has a really nice car out called the Fusion. FH father is good friends with the owner of a ford dealership, so we ask him what cars are good. He said his wife has the fusion and loves it, and the car got great reviews. FH is thinking about getting one. He also said the Escape is a great truck.

Also, the Honda Accord or Civic, always a good car and really nice looking.

Re: NWR: what car do you recommend

I have a Volvo and I love it. It drives really well, it is great on gas and the new ones look nice and sporty, not like the boxy older ones. I moved from NY to LA and I have to drive a lot now. I compared the toyotas and hondas (which are also great cars) and I just feel in love with my Volvo.

Good luck with your search.

Re: NWR: what car do you recommend

Nissan's are great cars, thy drive really good and are reliable. Love the Altima.

I like big cars though.. I drive a Yukon.

ETA: I would stay away from Fords, I have a contour that we use as a work car. After a few years they have a tendacy to be break down more than other cars.

Re: NWR: what car do you recommend

I have an Altima and I absolutely love it. Had it for almost 6 yrs now and it's never given me any problems, aside from the routine stuff.

My mechanic just told me last week as long as you get the oil changed every 3 months/3000 miles, Altimas can easily be a 200,000 mile car.

FI, a GM and a BM all have Toyota RAV4s and they are also great cars. Run smoothly and do very well with gas mileage.

I have to disagree, I had a '91 golf, and that thing saved my life in a horrible accident. Now I have a '04 Golf, and it's my baby. That thing has great gas mileage, it can fit into any parking space with out problems and it's affordable too.

I would say stay way from saturns. My FH had on and it was horrible to drive. Now he has a Subaru and he loves it (and I do too).
