nwr: what do you do about gifts you don't like? (with poll)

nwr: what do you do about gifts you don't like? (with poll)

I'm just really curious... with gifts it's definitely the thought that counts, and I always appreciate any time somebody puts thought and effort into buying a gift for me, I really do.

However, at the end of the holidays, while I definitely get some wonderful gifts, I am always left with a stack of stuff that I don't like or want and will never use. and I already have so much stuff that I really hate having the extra clutter. And I never know what to do about it.

It's especially complicated when it's gifts from people like my FH's family, who I really don't want to offend, and I want to show my appreciation by using their gifts, wearing jewelry they give me, etc, but they really just DON'T get my tastes! I so appreciate that they try, but much of what they've given me is so opposite to anything I would ever pick out for myself.
And then there are other things... for example, this year between my birthday (which is earlier in December) and the holidays, I have acquired not one but THREE necklaces with purple beads/stones/etc on them. The problem? I hardly ever wear purple! I own maybe 2 or 3 purple shirts, only one of which has a neckline I can wear a necklace with, and I hardly ever wear that shirt!

So, I am left with a problem. I can just hang onto them and let them gather dust. or... One of the purple necklaces I can exchange for something I like better, because I know where it came from and I have the gift reciept. I could sell some of the other stuff on ebay (some of it is really nice quality stuff, it's just things I would absolutely never wear by choice)... but I always feel bad getting rid of gifts. Usually what happens is I hang onto it for a year or so, get tired of having it taking up space, and then either give it away (to Goodwill, etc), or list it on ebay (if it's worth a decent amount). But... there's just so much this year, and I've really been trying to minimize the clutter. And I hate the idea of stuff hanging around that I don't use, I'd much rather it go to somebody who will love it and use it well.

I don't want to sound snobby or unappreciative - I really do appreciate the thought behind gifts, I just don't want my life all cluttered up with all this extra stuff I'll never use. I'd rather let somebody else have it and use it and enjoy it... and I figure with nice stuff, why not ebay it and make a few extra dollars to put in my savings for the house down payment fund?

ug, anyway. I always end up writing a novel when I post, sorry about that. I was just curious what you all do about things like this, and I got carried away with my story.

so, back to you. Do you guys ever have this problem?

I do with FH's family. They buy us the weirdest stuff. This year we got a comforter, that is just absolutely ugly!!!!! But most of the time, I hang onto everything b/c I feel bad, and FH feels bad that they gave it to me.... Last year though, I had sooo much stuff that I gave it away to a family whose house burned down...

I keep it cause otherwise I feel bad. I have the worst luck too cause they would probably ask me where it was

ha, good point. that happens to me too... FH's parents gave me a snowman pin on Christmas Eve (they open about half their gifts Christmas Eve), and then I went over there on Christmas and his mom asked me why I hadn't put it on my coat lapel! She sure didn't lose any time.

(the answer being because I've never put a pin on my coat lapel, and I don't know that I plan on doing so ever...)

it depends on what it is and who it came from .. if its from someone i'm not close to and its not too horrible i might regift it .. if its horid by from like future in laws i keep it and bring it out when they are around or i find some sort of use for it.. like i said depends on the situation

I usually return them or excahnge them for something else

I return if possible. If not, off to charity it goes. After being the victim of regifting at my engagement party, I vowed not to do it myself.

I always return if possible, otherwise I regift or give it away.

I would def return if possible ... if i cant return then i just give it away (not regift - but give to a freind or close relative that i think might like it)

aw, I can't believe you remembered that!

After a lot of thinking I decided that instead of wasting money on some random gadget or something that he doesn't need, I would give him an IOU for a night out together, since he really doesn't go out very much because he doesn't have many friends on the island.

I gave it to him on Sunday and he really appreciated it and said 'that's the perfect gift,' so I'm happy with my choice!

that's great! I knew you would come through for him. So, have you thought about where to go?

If I could not exchange or return for credit...
I would regift
