NWR: What do YOU do for a living? A little help (ideas) please!

Original post by dancinmyazoff

I teach dance but unfortunately dance schools have a busy season which means I only work from September - June. Sounds good but that also means I am unemployed during the summer months, aside for the 2 dance classes I teach (down from 25 during the busy season). I don't think I can deal with a 9-5 office job which I've done in the past but as I'm getting older I think I'm developing major ADD and just can't do the office thing. I'm trying to think of different jobs that I could possibly take on but my mind is coming up blank

So what's your job(s)?

Where do you teach dance? I think I really want to get into dancing again. I miss it so much!!

I teach at Divine Rhythms in Babylon WEBSITE HERE

and also at Miss Maryanne's in Locust Valley WEBSITE HERE

OMG, my niece takes classes at Miss Maryanne's and so does my sister, brother-in-law and nephew. I was just at the recital on Friday night. That's too funny. I wonder if you taught any of them? The Fahey family?

Get the heck outta here lol!!!!

I teach both Marissa AND Jodi!!!!! Maryann doesn't write on the programs who taught what classes so here are the classes in the recital that I taught.

- Girls of the night (lyrical...black desses)
- Cuando yo voy a bailar (tap...red dresses and fans)
- Picture Perfect (hip hop...red, black and white)
- Do it well (adult hip hop...black and burgundy)
- Apologize (lyrical...black and white)
- Why I'm hot (hip hop...green shorts set)
- Whined up (jazz...black and red)
- Trashin' the camp (tap...leopard dresses)
- Low (hip hop...gold jumpsuits)
- Thriller (I was actually in this number...black cape and big hat)

that is too funny. i love maryann's shows, they are always so great. I think I saw you, on the way out the door you were talking with Jodi, about the dance & I commented on your dance. I loved your make up and outfit for thriller. All the dances were really great and my favorites are always lyrical and hip hop. I'd love to take classes, but you teach too far away from me.

Thanks so much! Where are you located, cause I do teach at another studio in Babylon!

I work for Publishers Clearing House, so its direct marketing.... my buying isn't as fun as it used to be. I now buy print production which is very expensive, but the experience is really good..

I used to buy childrens furniture, that was so much fun! I loved it! But i left the company because I couldn't move up any further than where I was..

I want to get into accessories buying next, but its very hard, very competitive.

But honestly, anyone who is a buyer will tell you its a lot of work, but so much fun! As it is i love spending money, but when its not mine, its 10x's better!

If you love teaching, it seems like a natural next step to go for your teaching degree and license. I know a couple of teachers who also teach dance and at the studio I dance at (Dance Odyssey in West Babylon) there is at least one student
teacher who is going for her teaching degree. I'm a teacher and I wish I hadn't stopped dancing when I was younger (went back 4 years ago!!!)...I would love to teach dance!!!!
For the summer. have you thought about tutoring or babysitting? I did both when I was in college and it's cash $$!!!

melissa i am sorry i don't have any ideas. good luck

just wondering is your adult class hard. is that night and how much does it cost? i might want to take in the fall.

The adult class I teach in Divine Rhythms is seriously such a laid back class, we have so much fun. This past year it was 10 girls. There is a nice variety of levels. There are about 3-4 people who have never danced before and this past weekend was their first recital EVER. Then there are a few that have danced when they were younger but stopped and then came back just now. And then there are 3 who are beginner-intermediate and catch on quickly. Definitely come and take a class in the fall, call the phone number on the website and you can talk to Marilyn (studio owner), Patty or Joey and they can give you any info you need!

Sounds like soo much fun- i would love to do that!! I havent been to dance class since i was 16 but i think it would be such a fun way to keep in shape!!!

Come on down...my adult class is far from 'adult' it starts at 22 being the youngest and then I have 2 women in their 40's in the class as well...it's seriously such a fun class!!!!!!

Maybe you could do Ballroom dance lessons for adults? We are going for lessons now, for our August wedding. With so many weddings in the summer I am sure you would be busy!

I was thinking that also!!

Just my two cents -- I worked in at a non-profit and my experience is that they do NOT pay well, and I did not get more vacation time that job, either. The bigger ones might, however (American Cancer Society, etc). But when I was looking and interviewing, all the ones I visited paid well under the average salary for the job I was looking for.

As a summer job, however, it might suit you well.

Good luck!
