NWR: What do YOU do for a living? A little help (ideas) please!

Original post by dancinmyazoff

I teach dance but unfortunately dance schools have a busy season which means I only work from September - June. Sounds good but that also means I am unemployed during the summer months, aside for the 2 dance classes I teach (down from 25 during the busy season). I don't think I can deal with a 9-5 office job which I've done in the past but as I'm getting older I think I'm developing major ADD and just can't do the office thing. I'm trying to think of different jobs that I could possibly take on but my mind is coming up blank

So what's your job(s)?

i just went to a dance recital for the Ella Marie Dance Studio in Hicksville...they seem really busy and had 3 nights of shows at Hofstra to showcase their students.
you can try and see if they are hiring

the market is not the greatest now- but since the summer is slow for you- what about looking into real estate- our peak time is May-October- the hours aren't always ideal (lots of weeknights & allday weekends) but the pay can be great

My job is kinda the same deal - I do strength and conditioning for sports teams/athletes, but in the summer the schools and colleges are out so theres not much going on, so I do more personal training.
It's not too hard to get certified if you do the work, and as long as you have some confidence and look good you can do ok.

I work for Kaplan Test Prep...it's great because I am also persuing an acting career. Most of the people here are or have been in the arts, and it's great because the schedules are flexible....I would love to sing all day long 7 days a week, but my career is harder to find regular work in than yours. You're one of the lucky ones!

Where do you teach dance? I think I really want to get into dancing again. I miss it so much!!

I teach at Divine Rhythms in Babylon WEBSITE HERE

and also at Miss Maryanne's in Locust Valley WEBSITE HERE

melissa i am sorry i don't have any ideas. good luck

just wondering is your adult class hard. is that night and how much does it cost? i might want to take in the fall.

The adult class I teach in Divine Rhythms is seriously such a laid back class, we have so much fun. This past year it was 10 girls. There is a nice variety of levels. There are about 3-4 people who have never danced before and this past weekend was their first recital EVER. Then there are a few that have danced when they were younger but stopped and then came back just now. And then there are 3 who are beginner-intermediate and catch on quickly. Definitely come and take a class in the fall, call the phone number on the website and you can talk to Marilyn (studio owner), Patty or Joey and they can give you any info you need!

OMG, my niece takes classes at Miss Maryanne's and so does my sister, brother-in-law and nephew. I was just at the recital on Friday night. That's too funny. I wonder if you taught any of them? The Fahey family?

I'm a graphic designer, so I know what you mean about sitting at a desk all day, I can't wait to I'm a freelancer from home, hopefully in another year.

I'd love to take a dance class. I wish there a place near me I could go. I do take belly dancing at the yoga center near me which is so much fun.

Definitely look into more adult classes for the summer.

I'm familiar will Ella Marie...it's the same thing summer classes for any studio is so much less busy then fall and winter. So in addition the less classes the studio usually only uses their regular teachers for the summer classes and mostly don't hire outside until Fall.

I am a personal trainer. With your backround, this may be something you could look into. Even when your dance classes go back to the busy season, you could continue doing this as you can pretty much make your own hours. FM me if you want more information.

Not at the moment at Divine Rhythms but we do at Maryannes...but I do know about 5 people who are interested in taking adult tap at Divine Rhythms so if you want to inquire at that studio definitely do cause we can maybe put a class together!

that is too funny. i love maryann's shows, they are always so great. I think I saw you, on the way out the door you were talking with Jodi, about the dance & I commented on your dance. I loved your make up and outfit for thriller. All the dances were really great and my favorites are always lyrical and hip hop. I'd love to take classes, but you teach too far away from me.
