I think it depends on what part of the island you live in. There are towns in Nassau (i.e. Hicksville) that have so many trains and express trains, that it wouldn't be too bad.
I had a friend who commuted from Ronkonkoma for 3 years and she finally had to leave because it was just too much for her.
The pro is that you will make a ton more money!
I think you just have to think about how it fits into your life and how it would change your life.

FH commutes everyday to Brooklyn from LI (Hicksville). He is used to it. He leaves home about 7:20am (we live close to the LIRR for the convenience for him!). He comes home at 6:20pm sometimes up to 7:00pm if he has to stay later (cover for the big boss!).

He is tired but used to it. It's a direct train and he only has 1 subway station. So it's not too bad for him.

That allows me to have some time before he comes back (dinner, run errands, etc...)

I do on occasion. It's a PITA , especially if you chronically run late like I do...running for the train is the most exercise I get! LOL...its also expensive for the train ticket and subway everyday. I personally wouldn't mind doing it b/c in my career, and I'm sure the same holds true for most others, I could be making more than double what I make now. That being said, my quality of life would totally stink. I wouldn't get home until really late and have to get up at the crack of dawn. FH has put the kabosh on me commuting to the city b/c he's concerned about the strain it could have on our relationship if we never see each other. We live together and if we see each other for two hours every night, it's a lot. But if FH commuted to the city every day, we could go together and spend time with each other. I guess it depends on your own situation.

I did it every day for a year- from Huntington to Penn. Its not a bad commute - but you get tired of it. I would leave my house at about 7:10 and get to work at 8:40. I would leave work at 5 and get home at around 6:30. Luckily my office is right above Penn Station so there was no extra commuting.
Now I live in Queens so the commute is a lot shorter.
The LIRR ticket is very expensive -but pay is usually better in Manhattan.

i commute from Long Beach to the city. Here's my two cents:

The pros:
-- you don't have to deal with rush hour traffic
-- you can be more productive on the train (i.e - get extra work done)
-- you can sleep, relax, etc.

The cons:
-- you lose a good chunk of your day
-- when crowded, trains can be rather uncomfortable
-- your life revolves around a train schedule
-- the ticket is expensive

My fh commutes to the city, he leaves at 4 somrtning and is usually back at ronkonkoma at 5-6ish, it stinks sometimes but in his field you make better money in the city and he loves it,even the commute he has made friends on the train who he sits with everyday. I don't think i would ever do it

I've commuted to Manhattan for the last 6 years from Massapequa. Personally, I don't mind it. Yes, it's expensive. But I would rather sit on a train than drive to work any day. Also, the trains to and from Massapequa leave pretty regularly and there are a good number of express trains. So it really depends where you are commuting from. FH and I are looking for a house on LI and one of the factors in choosing a house is its proximity to the train station. I don't want my commute to become such a hassle that I have to leave my job.

I commute from Long Beach also and agree with the above. It is a much longer day. I used to work on LI and actually got things done during the week. Now I leave my house at 7:10 and get home at 8:00 at night. its rough

I commuted from Huntington every day for about 2 years. I moved to Hoboken after that and now have moved to the Northern Suburbs of NY.

The hardest part for me is sticking to someone else's schedule. Living in Hoboken it was great to pretty much come and go as I please.

I usually sleep in the morning and read on the way home. If there are days I have to work somewhat late, I usually end up working until I'm entitled to car service home (8pm, if I leave at like 7, I'd get home at the same time anyway).

ETA: I guess I'd sum it up as one of those things you get used to!

I agree with the pros but to add to the cons - the BIGGEST problem with commuting is the fact that you lose your entire day. I have longer hours than the average person but on my shortest day I'm on the train at 7am and home at 8pm. My long days can go from 7am-10pm. If you don't get on the express trains -forget it! You will make every stop and it will take over an hour! It is hard to do anything else during the week except for work I really want to come back to the LI - I will take traffic any day - my commute will still be shorter

I completely agree with this. I commuted from Babylon for a few years, and live in Hoboken now. I have to admit I miss having my mornings to relax, read the paper or read a book on the train - I feel more rushed now. However, it's the ride home that can be tough because sometimes you just want to get home. I didn't mind it that much though because in the next 2 years I'm probably going to be doing it again.

I live right on the outskirts of LI and my commute is approx. 1hr 30min both ways. I've been doing it since 1998. It feels very normal to me and I actually cannot envision working and or going to school anywhere else but the city. I alternate between sleeping and using my laptop to get work done.

Re: NWR: What do you think are the pro's and Con's of commuting into the city from

I did it for three years from Smithtown, and DH does it now. It can be hard and really burn you out depending on how far east you are. I ended up coming out to a job on LI and making more than in the city, which is rare.... DH works at NYSE. We will look to move closer in the next 5 years. It's rough and the train can really blow big time. What's worse, is they tend to raise the monthly ticket even though the service gets continually worse.

After being there on 9/11 and having virtually no way to get home and then again on the blackout, I called it quits!

I have commuted for about 8 years into midtown. I can honestly say that the reward has to exceed the inconvenience. DH works in LI now but he did it for about 8 years and would never go back.

I think it's great if one works in LI and the other in the city..he will run and do some errands while I'm on the way home. He comes into the city sometimes to work at his city office and we meet up for drinks and dinner.

If my job wasn't as good and the pay wasn't good, I wouldn't do it, but I have a good job with an awesome boss and good pay..much more than I could make on LI doing what I do.

DH commuted daily from Long Beach also but he worked at 1 Penn Plaza for a while so it wasn't as bad. But then he worked downtown right up until 9/11 and that was a PITA. The train would arrive in Long Beach at 7:20pm, and that's only if he ran out the door at 5pm.

He's been working close to me for a few years and it's been great, carpooling together. But now he's looking in the city again. We're saving for a house and he stands to make much more in the city than out here.

We live 5 blocks from the station so likes to walk home from the station unless it's bad weather.

Your comment above about being in the city through 9/11 and the blackout makes me nervous about FH going to work in the city. GOD Forbid we get hit again, I would FREAK out knowing he's in the city with possibly no way home...

I would hate it if my FH worked in the city. It's an hour and 1/2 commute from our house to penn on the express train. And since with our schedules we only get to spend a few hours together a night as it is.
