I also had a friend receive a year supply of diapersfrom her SIL. it was awesome! The best gift she got! All she had to do was call a number about a week before she ran out of diapers, and they were at her house. most practical gift. (I think it was hooked up to her SIL credit card)

I would say the same thing and it also may depend if your going to be the godparent as well. For example for my friends first baby, the godparents happen to be the BIL and SIL and they added to the large gift as well.

Besides getting a practical gift, I would get a $100-$500 savings bond for a college fund. My family members did that for me and it's really helping me pay for grad school right now.

I agree...one of the furniture items for the nursery.....or if your parents are doing that, then maybe you can buy all of the bedding and decor.

Definitely the bigger ticket items that other people won't get because it's too much $$$.

I am probably the wrong person to ask because I tend to go over board.

but the car seat /stroller is a great gift and crib/changing table. My suggestion would be to make sure that the person receiving it likes it.

You don't need the crib before the baby comes but you do need the infant car seat to bring the baby home in. There is all sorts of ratings on these products so I would make sure they are comfortable with what you pick.
