NWR - Where would you live in Long Island (what towns)??

Hi Girls - I would really appreciate your help on this...I am not from Long Island but I just got married and am looking to buy a house out there. Any suggestions on where I should look?? I don't know the towns out there and where I should look vs where I should avoid. I am looking to stay closer to NYC if possible. I like towns with a little character and charm. Not sure of price range yet, but for now, just looking to get a sense for neighborhoods/towns you would recommend. I am open to North Shore or South Shore, but several people have told me North Shore is 'nicer' or maybe has a bit more character?? I don't know, but any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!!

I prefer the north shore. Hilly, country like. Beaches are very rocky but free. South shore beaches are sandy but lots cost $$.

There are wooded areas all over the island, but I prefer the north shore.

I like Miller place, Mt, Sinai, Rocky Point, Port Jefferson, Shoreham, Wading River etc..

On the south shore I like Sayville and Center Moriches.

If I could live out east Id live in Bridgehampton.

I dont know anything about Nassau.

Good Luck!

Nassau can be very close to NYC. It really depends on your price range. The North Shore in Nassau County is pricey but beautiful. The South Shore has more affordable houses than the North Shore.

Just remember the taxes are very high in Long Island.

FM me if you need more specific information on certain towns.

Yeah, if you want to be close to NYC you should stay in Nassau. I live on the South shore and I really like it, but its pretty packed with people. The north shore has a lot of really nice towns with a lot of trees and space but I dont think the beaches are as nice (big plus about long island). I live in Massapequa and its a really nice town but you do have to watch for taxes, they're a killer.

I live on the south shore and love it. I'm actually in Sayville, and we have a main street with tons of cute little shops. We even have 2 free beaches right in my town. If you like trees, etc. the North shore is nice. THey have lots of towns with little shops over in Stony Brook, Port Jefferson, etc. but the beaches saren't comfy to lay out on b/c they have rocks!

i second sayville for the atmosphere.. however its a hike to nyc.. i did it for a few years.. its like 1.5 hours to midtown, 2 hours to other parts each way on a good day by train... but you can use the train time to destress, read, etc

maybe long beach? its closer to the city, nice watersedge type town...

taxes and home prices are total killers on LI.. which is why i have moved to nj from my cute lil hometown of sayville

If you want to be closer to NYC definitely stick to Nassau County or Western Suffolk County otherwise the commute gets ridiculous. As far as towns go, it really depends on your price range because there are so many and large price differences.

Rockville Centre is a great town (lots of places to eat & drink), good schools & a nice commute to NYC.

How about Merrick, Bellmore, or Wantagh (anyone feel like you're on the Babylon branch of the LIRR ) on the south shore. Or you could try Bayville (great haunted house in October) on the North Shore.Good luck!

Thanks girls!! I will definitely check these places out. Any towns on the North Shore that you would recommend that are not that far from the city. The only one I know of is Garden City, but prices are out of control there right now....I do like the trees, a little more space btwn houses, etc., but I don't know prices or anything about the North Shore towns. I got married at the Old Field Club in Setauket and I LOVE it out there, but it is way too far for me to commute....Any other help would be appreciated. Thanks so much!!

Levittown has more affordable houses. The taxes are still crazy high though.
It would really help if you could give somewhat of a price range, remember most of Nassau is very expensive with very high taxes.

If you are planning on living here for a while and having kids, look up the school district information. They shoudl have report cards posted at www.newsday.com. That would be most important to me.

North Shore Nassau is beautiful but pricey...if you have $$$ Brookville is georgeous...if you need to stay in average range...east meadow is nice...alot of nice neighborhoods...Levittown and Wantaugh are also very nice.

Good luck!

I live off the main street in Mineola, walking distance to the train (which is why we picked our apartment, DH works in NYC)... there are lots of little restaurants, nails places, etc... all in walking distance.

Great Neck is a little pirciey but it's on the North Shore and it's in Nassau -- close to the trains. It's a 1/2 hour commute into the city.

Good Luck with your search!!

if you want North Shore Nassau- you should also check out Glen Cove. not a bad commute at all. Also Great Neck too.

Do you really need to stay so close to the city? nicer, less populated, more charm-y, and less expansive places are futher east. and remember just because you go further east doesn't mean its such a big hassle to get to the city, from mid-suffolk (the easternmost county) you can take the train to the heart of manhattan and it takes just under an hour.

Thanks for all of the ideas - I have some research to do Not sure on my price range, but we will be looking to stay as affordable as possible - maybe 450-600k range?? 600k would be a stretch, but I know places are so expensive these days....Not sure if this helps. Thanks again!! Good luck with the weddings - I'm sure a lot of you will be in my shoes soon
