NWR-why am i having so many issues?

NWR-why am i having so many issues?

Jeeze; if it's not one thing than it's something else.

Can i get your opinions on NOT going to a destination wedding?

Here's some background-FH best best friend had a DW two years ago. We also closed on our house exactly 1 month before their wedding. BUT luckily; we had planned this trip almost a year prior and it was paid off; so it was perfect timing to get this trip right after all the stress of buying the house and got to celebrate her wedding with her.

A year ago a friend of mine also got engaged to her long time boyfriend. She started talking about having a DW and I told her i would see if i could swing the cost. But the place she chose what just too expensive and FH said he didn't really want to pay that much to go and even if we went for the minimum of 3 days we'd still be paying $1K EACH. We were just moving in and dealing w/remodeling and getting used to the mortgage and all the other bills were really hitting us hard. I even looked into just going by myself but that was even going to be about $700 and to be honest our $$ was very tight so we weren't planning any trips and i didn't want to pay that much and not even get a vacation with FH that year plus we had become engaged that year and were starting to plan our own wedding and thinking of ways to save $$

So anyway; i told her that i wouldn't be able to make it; she kept planning; but after a few months she found out her fh wasn't being 100% faithful and they broke up; she kicked him out called everything off. This went on for almost 4 months. In that time FH & I got better $$ wise and looked into doing a small trip just to get away from all the stress. We found a CHEAP cruise that was only $400 each! for 7 nights!! So we booked it. We got airfare and were planning to stay in the city near the port where i have family for 3 nights (w/family=free). It was turning out to be a great vacation @ very low costs. BUT my friend reconciled w/her finance and the wedding was back on. But the dates were the SAME time as when i had planned my trip (i honestly didn't realize this @ first; but in my defense their wedding was called off anyway).

So i felt VERY guilty and never told her i was going away; but just that i still couldn't swing paying for the trip to her wedding at the last minute (it was like 4-5 months out) especially since now airfare had gone up and it was $500 just to fly there.

To make a long story short-she found out that i was away while they were gone; and has barely talked to me since then (it's been 5 months). I used to think we were such good friends. FH tells me he always thought my friendship w/her was very 1-sided. I've always gone to ALL events she thrown; always gone to her kids parties; got them gifts; helped w/her showers; but she has never ever come through for me once. The only time she's been to the house i bought was when she asked if another person that had her son could drop him off at my house and then she'd come pick him up from there. She didn't even come to my engagement party because she thought it was just for grown ups! Hello-ask can kids come? Anyway; after she was a no-show to my e-party i lost some guilt about not being able to afford to go to her wedding.

Now 5 months later we barely talk and it hurts that our friendship is ruined. I sometimes think well i should have just figured out a way to come up with the $1K to go by myself and sacrifice a great trip i had with FH so that she would have been happy. BUT that's not fair to me. Now planning my wedding i see the importance of having people there that i love; but if i was going away and asking people to pay $1K+ to come; i'd understand if they couldn't make it and i wouldn't hold it against them if they decided to go on other cheaper trips throughout the year.

I just don't know what to do-i hate to see a friendship no matter how one-sided or whatever end after all these years (guess i just don't like having people be mad at me). But i can't in FH works kiss a s s to make it up to her that i wasn't there.

she should have understood the financial situation that you were in. honestly, when dealing with a DW, if people can afford it, they'll show up, but it is a lot to ask of the guests to attend a DW.

if she hasn't supported you in anything you've done, then i think you should stop chasing her. she doesn't seem worth it and she doesn't deserve the great friend that you've been.

i know that is hard to hear, but it's the truth and honestly, you're probably better off w/o her. ppl all tend to grow in separate directions and become ppl we sometimes just dont recognize after a while.

it's unfortunate, but i hope it all works out for you in the end.

ok it's not your fault that you couldn't go. FH's cousin had a DW in Jamaica and we couldn't go. I never felt bad. I'm sorry but when you don't have the $, you don't have it.

In truth, I'd probably never go to anyone's DW. I have 2 dogs and tons of obligations, and if I wanted to go on vacation, I'd plan it myself. I'm one of the few people that thinks DW are selfish. I'm sorry if I'm offending anyone. It's just enough of an expense to go to someone's wedding locally than to worry about flying , boarding my dogs etc.

If she was your friend, she'd understand. I mean, she called everything off and in that time, you planned something else. That's not your fault. plus, really, who is she to get mad that people don't go broke showing up to her DW. Freaking selfish.

Can you just talk to her about it and tell her how you feel about everything?

You seem like youve been an amazing friend to her, and she hasnt been a friend to you at all. Its hard to lose people you love, but maybe shes no good for you

Exactly!!! FH wanted to do a DW but i just didn't want to ask friends/family to spend that much to go to a place we're choosing. The only reason why we went to that other DW was because that girl is like FH sister she'd take a bullet for him (so to speak) and it was planned & paid for BEFORE we bought our house; before we started remodeling our kitchen.

I just hate to know that after all this time she's still mad over it. But i agree-it's very selfish of her to still be holding this against me. I have my own responsibilities now. When we first became friends (she's 5 years older) I was still in College; living at home so i was always eager to help her with the kids when she needed it. But now that i have a full time job; a fiance; and a house to pay & keep up i just don't have the time anymore like i did before.

I did talk to her about it. When she found out that FH & I had gone on vacationi; she never even contacted me just total silence; then i finally e-mailed her to see how the wedding was and she wrote like 2 sentences saying how it was good; and then an entire essay about how she really wanted me there and felt like she got the short end of the stick. I apologized and tried to explain to her. But she was upset because she said she thought we didn't have the $$ to go; but was hurt to find out that we went away somewhere else!

I tried to explain to her that where we went was 1/3 of the price it would have cost to go to the resort she was planning. And that this was all planned when i thought the wedding was no longer on. We went back and forth over e-mail; and it seemed like the situation had been resolved; but the fact that i've barely spoken to her shows that it hasn't. We only talk if i initiate the conversation. I guess i just have to let this friendship run it's course and whatever happen will happen. FH says she isn't a friend to me. But guess i've known her so long i don't just want to cut her out and loose touch.

I just hate that it seems like after all these years; whatever kind of friendship i thought we had has been ruined over money-and it's over money that i didn't have to spend for her...it's not like money was borrowed and caused a riff or something. I honestly just couldn't go. I had an amazing cruise w/FH; swam with dolphins; sting rays; went rock climbing, sufing (on the ship LOL) for 8 days plus 3 extra in Orlando (w/free tickets to Universal Studios). Although i would have loved to see her walk down the isle it would have cost 3 times as much to fly to an island and lay out on the beach for 3days. And again this was after she already called her wedding off!

She sounds extremely unreasonable. When you decide on DW, you are almost guaranteed alot of no shows. It's just too much money sometimes but your friend seems to think she should be top priority.

I think you did the most you could do by explaining your situation. She just doesn't want to hear it.

I don't want to come off sounding harsh or horrible, but if she was really that good of a friend to begin with she would have recognized that you didn't plan your trip to intentionally coincide with her wedding, and that you planned it after it was called off, with no knowledge that the situation would change again.

I understand you don't want to see a friendship end (I'm the same way), but if she's going to not talk to you over something like this then I'd say she was never as good of a friend as you thought.

Another thought, can you move the dates of your cruise without paying more money and still afford to go to the wedding? Some cruise lines will let you do move dates depending on the circumstances. If you can't then I wouldn't worry about it, you didn't do it maliciously.

Oh we already went on the cruise-it was last november. I did think about changing the cruise when i found out her wedding was back on; but we had already booked our airfare. so i couldn't cancel it.

if a friendship like this is so one sided, then no matter what it would have come to an dend at some point. better now so you don't have to waste any more time or energy thiking about what could have been.

you h ad an e-party and she didn't go, why? i'm sure you would have let her bring her kid. she probably didn't want to leave a gift.

people come into your life for a reason, and sometimes just for a season - sounds cheasy but its true.

we had a backyard e-party. There were plenty of kids there! She 1st told me she coulnd't go b/c she was planning to take her kids to seasame place w/some other parents that same day. (she never said oh let me just go another weekend but beside the point). I knew she wasn't coming; it was a week later that i e-mailed her and asked her how seasame place was that she tells me they never made it cause one of the parents had to cancel so they just stayed home. My response was why didn't you come to the e-party? She then told me b/c she thought it was just adults & she didn't have a sitter. She should have called and just asked if she wasn't sure. But it started at 3pm on a saturday afternoon; kids were running around playing w/the balloons...And this was before her wedding so it's not like she was still mad over that. My e-party was 3 months before her wedding.

If she isn't willing to hear your side of the story AND if she can't understand how it all came to be- then she isn't a good friend.
Do you really want someone like that in your life?
Relationships are give and take
BOTH giving and taking.

your a great friend to even be considering still going to her wedding.

I'm an advocate for peace- i hate being in arguments- but sometimes ya have to cut your losses and move on

good luck hun
