NWR- YOU WON'T BELIEVE WHAT JUST HAPPENED TO ME

So I'm at work and I get a call from the police. It turns out some guy just got arrested in Manhattan on a weapons charge. PS- he's got my name, social security number, and birthday in his back pocket, along with a credit card in my name, which he clearly opened up with my information. He had info for 3 other people as well. The cops know where he got their info, but they can't figure out where he got mine, so they said since I live out of town and it probably wasn't from someone stealing my mail, then he probably bought it off of one of those Nigerian websites where they sell social security numbers, and that now that it's out there, it's out there forever (pardon the run-on. I am beside myself). They have reason to believe 5 other people have my info.

I'm so proud of myself for handling this like such a grown up. First I wept like my dog died, then I got sick. Then I promptly went out and got a hero sandwich the size of the Intrepid. So not only did this bast**d ruin my day and my credit, but my diet as well.

Just a warning to you ladies to get one of those credit report monitoring services. I wish I did. Now I have months of phone calls to credit unions and credit card companies to look forward to. Not like I was doing anything else with my time.

Omg im so sorry to hear about this. Something similar happened to my FH but they stole his SS and then filed income taxes with his SS to try to get his tax return and stimulus..These people are really horrible when they do this to unsuspecting people. Once again sorry this happened to you

I have NO IDEA how anyone got this info. I am sooo careful about this stuff, you have no idea. I shred everything, etc. I am just so raging mad, I can't believe it. The only thing I can think of is she asked if I had applied for any credit cards recently, and would you believe the only place I did was at Macy's when I registered? I TOTALLY doubt that's what happened, though. Who knows. I mean, it could be something as stupid as someone seeing it at the Dr.'s office, or something like that. Or it could be hacked online, I guess.

Why can the world be so horrible?

And what's so funny is that when I just typed that sentence, I remembered the post from a few days ago when that girl gave another LIWer her veil for free, and how nice that was. So I guess the world isn't horrible, but damn, there are some real pigs in it.

omg i am so sorry!! I am always afraid of that myself.. I dont even know what i would do if i were you but I can def. say I would have had the same reaction as you did...i would still be crying!

omg i'm so sorry. that really s u c k s. i hope there wasn't too much damage to your credit. you should put a lock on your credit now so that no accounts can be open and no inquires made.

I just signed up for the 3 in 1 Equifax Gold Monitoring system for $150 a YEAR. THEN all these people I work with said that if I'm a victim of Identity Theft, the credit unions provide you with free credit reports for life. I had no idea. But to tell you the truth, it made me feel better. Now everytime someone does anything with my credit, I'll be contacted. I can't believe I have to PAY to make sure no one steals my credit... you'd think these companies would be careful enough to do it themselves.

I mean, how was this GUY using MY card? I'm sure he doesn't look like a Suzanne.

So sorry to hear this happened to you. I have had fraudulent charges on my card a few yrs ago so after that I am very careful where I use my Credit cards and immediately got a credit monitoring service. It is sooo worth it. I get notified about EVERYTHING!

You should put a fraud prevention alert on your credit report. This way, no one can open up any credit in your name without first confirming with you.

I do this every 3 months and let me tell you, it is a B1tch
to open up a new credit card, which is good because then the *******$ can't do it either. It lasts 90 days and it's free.

Anyone can do it so I suggest that everyone go and put this on their card. Basically, if you try to open up anything like checking or credit, they call you or ask you to bring in further ID like social security card.

Not that it's good that it's so rampant but like 10 years ago when this was first happening, there was NO recourse for someone in your position. At least now their are victims' groups and advocates and credit companies are aware of it so they're more willing to help. My boss just got a call a couple weeks ago that someone had charged airline tickets to Turkey on his card. They called to see if it was him and he was able to stop it. That happened with my parents too. So at least the credit card companies are looking out for it as well. Good luck!

I am probably just waaay paranoid but how do you know for sure that this happened? If the 'police' called me, I wouldn't believe its the police. I might be just nuts though. Did they give you your personal information to verify or did they ask you your personal information to verify?
Never give personal information out over the phone no matter who they claim to be. I am sure in your case it was the police and i am sure that you are just not posting all details of course.
