NWR- YOU WON'T BELIEVE WHAT JUST HAPPENED TO ME

Original post by Suzanner

So I'm at work and I get a call from the police. It turns out some guy just got arrested in Manhattan on a weapons charge. PS- he's got my name, social security number, and birthday in his back pocket, along with a credit card in my name, which he clearly opened up with my information. He had info for 3 other people as well. The cops know where he got their info, but they can't figure out where he got mine, so they said since I live out of town and it probably wasn't from someone stealing my mail, then he probably bought it off of one of those Nigerian websites where they sell social security numbers, and that now that it's out there, it's out there forever (pardon the run-on. I am beside myself). They have reason to believe 5 other people have my info.

I'm so proud of myself for handling this like such a grown up. First I wept like my dog died, then I got sick. Then I promptly went out and got a hero sandwich the size of the Intrepid. So not only did this bast**d ruin my day and my credit, but my diet as well.

Just a warning to you ladies to get one of those credit report monitoring services. I wish I did. Now I have months of phone calls to credit unions and credit card companies to look forward to. Not like I was doing anything else with my time.

I am probably just waaay paranoid but how do you know for sure that this happened? If the 'police' called me, I wouldn't believe its the police. I might be just nuts though. Did they give you your personal information to verify or did they ask you your personal information to verify?
Never give personal information out over the phone no matter who they claim to be. I am sure in your case it was the police and i am sure that you are just not posting all details of course.

I was going to say the same thing. Did you get the precinct that the 'officer' said he was from? If so, I'd call them to verify that you were really speaking to someone from the Police Dept.

I've heard that in these situations, it may help if you file a police report, so that you can show the credit companies that your info was stolen.

I'm sorry that you're going through this and hope that you found out before too much damage was done.

I'm so sorry to hear this, FH 'misplaced' his phone and we reported it the next day and the phone company canceled the service....we come to find out yesterday that in that 1 day that we were looking for the phone someone found it and racked up $221 in long distance phone calls and now the phone company is telling us we are responsible.

Some people are LOSERS and have nothing better to do that steal peoples hard earned stuff and in your case all of your information...I hope you get everything fixed and back to normal.

omg that is absolutely insane! I am so sorry this happened to you; something very similiar happened to my parents also. Very scary to know anyone out there could have your information and can do whatever they practically want. That is so unbelievable! I'm sorry

Thanks so much, ladies. When the police called and the detective started telling me what happened, I asked her for her phone number and called her back to make sure she was really with the police. And they told me the guy's name, which surprised me, but they wanted to see if I knew him. Just so creepy. I really appreciate the kind words!

i watched my former co-worker go through this, and i'm sorry for the lifelong hassle it's also incredibly scary for the rest of us, reminded that even responsible behavior can't shield you from identity theft when they can look your sh** up on some nigerian website....

on a positive note, you haven't lost your sense of humor. not that i think your situation is funny at all, but your post made me laugh.

So , they stole YOUR stuff AND they caught the guy who did it, and your credit is still going to be ruined???? I am missing something here. ISn't that like justice and what we want to happen so that we wont have to go through all of that with the credit agencies!!!

I used to work for a deby collection agency when I was 17. We used to have to take payment over the phone, and when we pulled up the account, we would have social security number, address, full name, and now their credit card information. After hearing about those fake call centers that call you and get your information from you b/c you think they are the company, I have stopped making payments over the phone hah. I either do it electronically, or I send them a check or pay at the bank that I have my credit card from (Capital one, Bank of America, etc.)

It just amazes me that we have no real protection against I.T. other than having to pay $150 for it.
I am so sorry this happened to you. :(

Whoa. What?? Prob getting my license??? I didn't even think of that. Are you serious???

I have totally blocked this out of my head today. I was so freaked out yesterday, I have put my head in the sand today, and watched movies (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, cute) and the Strangers (super scary, but it pissed me off. I mean, the first thing they have to take care of in a horror movie these days is why the character in trouble can't just call the cops on a cell phone. So one character's phone has no battery left, so she plugs it in with the charger, and STILL can't call out? Ruined the movie for me. Won't for you- it happens in the beginning. I'm just saying.)

Like I said, anything but thinking of this nightmare.

I do have to say, I've never posted about anything like this before, and it really did make me feel a lot better. How wierd. Thank you again so much, everyone. You really did help, and I am so appreciative.

ps. My crisis eating has continued, btw. Had a burrito today the size of an armadillo. And a whole bag of chocolate rice cakes. Those bastards have some nerve calling something 'rice cake', and then having the whole bag be 420 calories.

They better make industrial grade maxi spanx, or I'm in some serious sh*t.
