NWR:Chanukah post - how to light the candles

Chanukah starts Friday night at sundown. Here is an FYI for those who need the info:

Candles are placed in the menorah from right to left, with the number of candles corresponding to which night of Chanukah it is. There is also one additional candle, which is usually elevated, called the “shamash,” or service candle. The shamash is lit first, and then used to light the other candles, from left to right.

If your menorah is in a window, it is my belief that it is on display for people outside and should be lit opposite of the directions above. If your menorah is lit for display inside then the rules above apply and are lit as indicated below:

Day 1

Day 2

Day 3

Day 4

Day 5

Day 6

Day 7

Day 8

I have one that I light inside and one for the window that has bulbs. That one looks backwards from the inside.

And just in case you are wondering, I will more than likely be annoying and post pictures of my menorahs EVERY DAY of Chanukah just like last year. Chag Sameach!

You have no idea how many times I have wanted to knock on people's doors to tell them to fix it.

you do have to be you.

it's wonderful when someone takes the time to inform and educate others.

there are too many people who don't know the details of something like chanukah but are shy to ask for fear of offending.

thank you, i'm so looking forward to ALL the holidays!!!!

I ask a lot of questions about other faiths. Last night DH and I were at a holiday party and I saw a display of a manger scene and the baby Jesus wasnt there. I thought it had been taken or lost or something when in fact they told me they simply dont take out the baby til Christmas day - when he was born. It all made sense then. Frankly, I was rather proud that I recognized that the 'key player' was missing!

Yes - I learned that one with my ex-boyfriend.... Makes sense! His mom always had an awesome manger - one year, her young grandson gave her a little dinosaur, and every year after that, she kept that dinosaur with her manger set and added it with the rest of the animals awaiting the birth of baby Jesus!
