NWR....Diabetes

Okay so I went to the DR today for a normal physical. I went like 2 weeks ago and got the blood work done so today they had all the results in and went over it with me. I was suprised that my Cholesterol was as low as he said (223) which I know is high but alot lower than the last time I had a physical (About 3 yrs ago). Blood Pressure.....normal.......BUT he said that Im boarderline Diabetes. Now Im just confused because I didnt know its somethingn that you can apparently get later in life? I just turned 30 and no doctor ever in the past mentioned it. My Grandma, Aunt and my great-grandma all had/have it so it is in the family. I thought it was something that your diagnosed with like when your younger?
He wants to send me for some test which is done at a lab and its like 3 hours. They give me something to drink I sit there, they check me, drink again , sit there, blah blah blah.

Point of this post is.....I didnt know that you can get it at anytime of your life? I guess I thought it was soemthing that your diagnosed with when your like young?

You can get Type II Diabetes later in life. Its not the kind little kids get where they need insulin shots and all. Type II is caused by insulin resistance (and usually realted to being overweight). It is usually treated with oral meds except in severe cases. And if you are overweight, it can go away if you loose weight.

I'm a dietitian and work with a lot of people with Type II diabetes. FM if you have questions.

My dad recently got it. My grandfather got it at about the age of 70.

ditto to everything except i'm not a dietitian .

my grandmother developed it in her 60's.

weight and eating habits have a lot to do with it. if you and your dr feel that you are overweight, getting rid of excess weight will help get rid of it or put off getting it for a lot longer.

you definitely want to speak to a dietitian to advise you on how to not get it (if you're still only borderline).

hth

good luck to you. and congrats on lowering your cholesterol

If you have it, it is most likely type II. There are rare occassions in which Type I (juvenile)diabetes pops up in your 30s. But if you are 'borderline' you are probably not Type I. Type I usually have very extreme sugar levels when they first find out. MY DH was 18 when he was diagnosed with type I and even that is old for someone to get type I. Either type is not necessarily a death sentence. My DH has an insulin pump and his overall health is much better than mine (and we are now 38, so he has had it for 20 yrs). For type II, some people control it with diet alone!

I was diagnosed with type 2 when I was in my mid 20's. It was brought on by a very fast weight gain. They'll probably put you on oral medication, but they will first advise you to lose some weight in order to avoid the medication. Although it sux having diabetes, its easily manageble with one or two pills a day. If you have any other questions, fm me. I'd be more than happy to answer any of your questions.

I can be managed with diet and pills. You can control it. Unlike Type 1 diabetes, you can control Type 2 with diet and exercise. I have been a Type 1 diabetic for 22 years and have taken insulin for those 22 years. I think I am healthier than most people (knock on wood) because I take better care of myself and watch what I eat. If you are diagnosed with diabetes, take control of the disease, don't let it take control of you! My endocrinologist was telling me that she is seeing younger children being diagnosed with Type 2 because Americans are unfortunately heavier and not exercising.

ditto.

i'm also a 22-year type 1 diabetic!! lol. and i aslo think that many times i am healthier than most people b/c i'm obsessed with controlling my sugars, plus i'm careful with diet, exercise, etc.

try to do what you can to avoid getting the type 2. it can eventually develop into type 1 (which is not reversible - once on insulin always on insulin).

Re: NWR....Diabetes

Hey sweetie,
I'm a medical student and have seen about 1,000 diabetics during the last two years of working in hospitals. My only advice is to lose weight asap! It might seem impossible but it really is your only way to avoid taking medication for the rest of your life. I have literally seen ppl 'lose their diabetes' when they lost weight. The thing with meds - they'll control your sugar for a while, but then will stop working, then you'll have to take stronger meds and eventually this ends up with Insulin shots. You dont' want to go there. Don't even get me started on all of the side effects of Diabetes....

My advice is diet and exercise asap. FM me if you have any questions.

Good luck!
Oh, that exam your Dr wants you to take is called a glucose tolerance test. No biggie. You'll drink sugar water and they'll measure your blood sugar. No worries.
Good Luck again!

Re: NWR....Diabetes

I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes 4 years ago. No one in my family has ever had before me not on either side of the family. Now a days it no longer runs in the family, anyone at any age can have diabetes and not know they have it. I didn't know that I had Diabetes until I had to have blood work done, my blood sugar was 480. I was on pills and I'm doing so well that the Doctor took me off of them. There is now a new form of Diabetes out it's a combo of both 1 & 2 and they're calling it Type 3 and it's very hard to treat in children.
