My FH & I are planning to have our wedding in 2008. Right now he is at a job that does not offer full benefits so we're paying almost $400 a month for his health insurance- which he MUST have since he sees many specialists & has health issues. (we've looked into less expensive plans but either he makes too much money to qualify or his specialists aren't included) My job does provide full benefits & I thought they wouldn't be available until we were married but I just heard of a law in NY state-- the 'domestic partners' law-- stating that couples- same or opposite sex, after meeting certain requirements, ie: living together for more that 6 months, same address on licenses, joint bank accounts, listed as each other's power of attorney, beneficiary of life insurance, common interest in real estate, etc. (which we meet) are eligible for the same benefits as a married couple. Has anyone expirienced this? If so-- how do I go about it?? Thanks for any insight!!

Re: NWR....help!
yea my FH and I did this....he got the forms from his job and we filled them out and had them noterized (saying that we have been living together for 6 months or more) and then that's it...I was on his insurance that week. It was really simple...I would go to your HR dept and ask for the forms

Re: NWR....help!
I'm under FH's insurance as a domestic partner. But I'm not sure if it's a statewide thing, I think it might depend on the individual insurer at your job. Check with your job/insurer/HR.
We had to prove we lived together for six months, and prove financial interdependence I think. Plus have forms notarized.
There was a post on this not that long ago, maybe do a search for insurance and see what comes up.

I'm not sure if it's a statewide thing either, but I know many employers do offer the domestic partner benefit. Speak to your HR department! Good luck.

Re: NWR....help!
if you dont mind-- who are the insurance companies providing this? I know that NYS passed a law about domestic partnership-- I'm just not sure exactly what it covers-- Juliana passed it in the 90's-- Thanks for the help!

DH and I were going to do this before we got married because we thought it would be cheaper but we never followed through until I quit my job and we were married. All you need is a copy of lisence and a joint bank account(monthly statement. who ever is in charge of payroll should be able to help you filling it.
