NWR:Tips on quitting smoking???

I've tried everything!!! Everytime I am ready there is some stupid event that forces me to be around it and I end up caving...anyone have any helpful suggestions on how to stop for good!

and plus my FH hates it (don't blame him) and I promised him I would stop when we got engaged and I haven't done so (but have tried & tried) and he is getting (don't blame him) I wish I never started

Did you try the gum. That is what my FMIL uses now for like 7 years

Re: NWR:Tips on quitting smoking???

I quit cold turkey almost a year ago. It was really hard and I was really b!tchy for about 5 days but then it's not that bad. I still miss it but I feel soooooo much better and wouldn't go back to it.

One of my co-workers used Zyban and said it really took that edge off for the first few days.

It's a little easier since you can't smoke anywhere anymore so the times I enjoyed a cigarette the most, say at the bar, you can't smoke anymore anyway.

Try taking up a hobby or activity that uses your hands.

Good luck

you have to really want to do it.

sometimes people say they want to quit but really are not committed. once you know you want to stop you will try anything and everything to do so. i am a social smoker and was a smoker smoker back in the day. the hardest thing for me was to drink and not smoke. once i got over that hump the rest was easy...you need to just get into a new habit of not doing certain things!

Maybe we should be each others cheerleaders! I've wanted to quit for awhile but its so difficult b/c all my friends (and FI) smoke! I was thinking of hypnosis!

I quit cold turkey as well about 3 years ago. The first few days were the hardest but I used a lot of Blow Pops to get through it. They gave me that constant hand to mouth motion. I still crave them every so often (since FI still smokes) but I just think about how disappointed I would be in myself afterwards and don't do it. Now I also think about how I would ruin how strong I have been for over 3 years. It's not worth it to me.

I am fighting this battle myself - I promised to quit after the wedding - that was 2 months ago. I did really well for like the first week, but then I caved. I thought I was ready, and I know its soo bad for me but I can't help it. I've cut down a lot - I used to smoke a pack a day, now I can get through with 3 cigarettes a day.
My Hubby doesnt know (or at least we don't talk about it).

Same here. I smoked for 9 years. After a long night out of drinking and smoking I woke up to FH (then my boyfriend) with his face all scrunched up because of the STENCH coming from me. That was 2 years ago this past April and while I've smoked some butts since then, that was when I quit being a 'smoker'. And now, unless I'm absolutely bombed (which happens about once a year) I don't even crave it.

Good luck!

Re: NWR:Tips on quitting smoking???

I quit cold turkey (sort of) 5 months ago. Fiance quit 4 months ago, same way.

It went in stages. First it got banned in bars. So it was less cigarettes on the weekends.

Second we never smoked at home and stopped in the car.

Third I slowly eliminated certain cigarettes that I smoked like the one before I got on the train in the morning or the one on the way to Penn Station in the evening, and then cut off all smoking after getting home in the evening. I got down to 3 or 4 a day and then decided on a Saturday morning that I was going to try not to smoke that day, same on sunday.

Monday came - back into the weekly routine so I changed it, I took a different route to the train station, parked in a different area of lot, walked out a different door of Penn station so I wasn't standing on the corner where I always used to light my cigarette.

I changed a lot of other little habits to help eliminate the really bad one, and drank LOTS of water.

Good luck, it's really hard but so so worth it.

If you can catch the NOVA special on the search for a safer cigarette I think you'd quit cold turkey before it was over.

i have the same problem, fh smokes too, and we're always lighting up with each other, but I swore that if Im still smoking when we get married, I wont smoke the wedding day, I think its disgusting to see a bride with a cigarette, so i said I can have one that morning b4 i start doing anything, and if i'm feening for one later on....lol then i'll try to sneak one in wayyy b4 reception starts lol
but since the planning started i find myself smoking more!

What really worked for me was Zyban/Welbutrin. Omg, that stuff is amazing. I smoked for 10 yrs and I tried everything: the gum, the patch, the inhaler, etc etc.... this was the only thing that worked -- FH and I have both been quit for over 4 months now.

If you get it as Welbutrin, your insurance usually covers it (same EXACT thing as Zyban). Plus its better than Nicotine replacement therapies because you are off nicotine IMMEDIATELY as opposed to trickling down... Your addiction to nicotine is effectively broken sooner, if you ask me.

A WORD OF ADVICE:

If you have ANY weight you want to lose whatsoever, LOSE IT FIRST THEN QUIT because it is virtually impossible to lose weight after you quit. And you WILL gain weight, even if you eat like a bird and exercise like a madwoman. I've been struggling for the past 4 mos because when you quit, your metabolism slows to a halt... it' seriously almost makes me regret quitting...

Re: NWR:Tips on quitting smoking???

I smoked a small amount...on average one or two cigarettes a day, but as measly as that was I had a very hard time stopping altogether b/c I enjoyed the ritual of lighting up. What worked for me was a drastic change of routine...I moved into a new apartment with FH and started a new job and I guess the change of scene was what I needed to break the habit. So maybe it would be somewhat helpful to try messing with your daily routine a bit to avoid the triggers or places or people or whatever that would encourage you to smoke.
