NYC Teachers and Teachers College

anyone else follow teachers college?

I really cant stand these stupid lesson plans..

when good readers read they...

watch me as I...

Today and everyday when you read....

arrgg.. what happened to making lessons interesting... my kids are so drilled with this.. i think if I gave them the teaching point, they could do the whole lesson word for word!

haha

what are your thoughts on it?

LOL, I'm a TC grad!!! Yea Lucy Calkins reading and writing can be annoying. I take some stuff out of it and make it my own. My school is pretty progessive so we don't have to do things scripted.

im really on the fence with it..

i think my school might be dropping TC next year.. which for me i think could be good or bad.

good because i cant stand the scriptedness of it.

Bad because the next program could be worse. and I will have to do my lesson planning again arrgg.. hehe

I am teaching in NYC and use TC... I teach in an inclusion class, so sometimes I change my language.. but on EVERY SINGLE Balanced Literacy lesson plan

'Today and everyday...'

'Turn and talk...'

'Off you go!'

'Today and everyday!'

What grade do you teach????

what school do you teach at? Are you gonna do Accelerated Literacy? If you are, you won't have to change your lessons. I can't think of her name, but the woman in charge, trained under Lucy and branched off

I know, we go to Central Park all the time. I haven't used the museum once this year. Can you believe it. I have to make it there though. I want to visit the panorama of the seasons, since we are studying spring

I love studying characters. It's so much fun. Love poerty too. I do it at the beginning of the year because I feel it gives the child freedom to write and helps improve stamina.

For charac. study, have them do an activity where they describe their personality. You model them then have them do it on a post card or a construction paper. Then, put their pic. on it and there is your bullentin board thing.

You can extend the character study, read a chapter book together, study the characters in that book (all children should have a copy or share a copy) then have them make oversized versions of the character, give them construction paper and have them describe the character and what they are doing in the story.

I teach in Queens. We saved the poetry unit for now, I believe it is the writing genre of the month, so it worked out.

We were using Teachers College and now we are using America's Choice. Essentially, they are the same way of teaching. Some of it really does not work with my 3rd graders and some they enjoy. The problem is that these programs are not good for all types of learners. Some children do better with traditional teaching and some learn better with modeling and hands on learning. What frustrates me the most is that I have no choice in the matter.

Who knows where we will be with the reorganization of schools....

Ok you said it best.. that is how i feel. i think that if we were able to have more control in it, we could differentiate and be able to target different students.

Sorry to crash but I have had to use the TC workshop model in English for 4 years now. Before that I did 3 yrs without it.
Somethings are really cool and useful and the rest is some lock-step philosophy!

I hate the stupid script...
*'Watch me as I show how I.....'
*'So readers, everytime....blah BLAH BLAH'

KILL ME!!

And the ULTIMATE WORST is the conferring phrases like, 'So how is your reading going??'

They look at me like, 'Are you serious Ms. B.?? What kind of dumb question is that???'
