I taught briefly in the city for 3 months when I was offered a job on LI. Since the commute and pay was better, I took it. Now, I might be excessed and was thinking of reapplying to the city at some point. Since I left without 30 days notice ( I gave 2 1/2 weeks), I was told I would be 'red flagged.' What does this exactly mean? Am I unable to ever reapply to the city? Thanks for any help/insight, I'm just curious!
Edited: I'm a shortage area teacher (spec ed) so I don't know if that would make a difference

Re: NYC Teachers Question
You can apply but I am not sure that you will be hired again. I have never heard of that term though. There will be a lot of excessing in NYC as well this year due to impending budget cuts so the teachers who are excessed need to be placed first

Re: NYC Teachers Question
I taught Saturday Academy at a junior high in Hollis and I quit because the kids weren't showing up, it was seriously disorganized and a total waste of my time. I gave them a week. I was told I would be 'flagged' and I wouldn't be hired for another per session position. That was BS -- within a month I had another per session job.
If NYC is desperate enough all those 'policies' go out the window.

Re: NYC Teachers Question
From what I understand, if you are red flagged you cannot get a job w. the NYCBOE. Sometimes administrators use it a threat but don't actually go through w. the paperwork. BUT if your administrator did go through w. the paperwork, then you might have a hard time getting a job, if at all. Hopefully not. Call the BOE and ask. Keep us posted.

Re: NYC Teachers Question
Thanks for your replies..Yeah, I guess I will call and ask.. Who should I call? UFT? or HR? It was weird, a couple of weeks after I left and had been threatened with the 'red flag' thing, I got a packet from Court St. congratulating me on my 'retirement' and giving me paperwork forms so I could sub per diem. I didn't know what that meant
I do believe you have to give 30 days notice, which will be reflected in your file. A friend that I worked with decided to resign this spring and had to work until Feb. 29, which was 30 days from her letter of resignation. If you don't, it is considered 'abandonment.' HTH

Re: NYC Teachers Question
I was told that once you leave the DOE in the nyc you can not reenter the system until 3 years later. Im not sure how true it is.Let me know when you find out!

Re: NYC Teachers Question
When you are red flagged, that tells the city that you left and that you didn't leave the city system on a 'leave'. You may not get hired again, however the city system is so messed up, I'd still try!
