NYC teaching fellow program

Does anyone know about this program, or has anyone become a teacher this way?

I applied to this programlike 2 years back. However, didnt continue with it. I had some other things going on at the time. I have heard good and bad things about it. The bad thing is that they stick you in bad schools. This is what I hear. Do your research first?

yeah i heard the same thing; that they place you in whatever schools they need you most in, which are usually the ones no one wants to work at; i had a friend in college get into this program, she didn't care when they stuck her, just wanted to teach...so its really up to you; i would research it some more before you make a desicion.

I applied a few years ago and went through the interviewing process...its a great an opportunity for professionals who want to become teachers. They pay for your Masters and all your teacher certifications, however, bear in my mind that you have to sign a contract and work for the Bd of Ed for two years, and they have the right to place you (which they usually do) to any school throughout the NYC-mostly poor performing schools...I did not pursue it for this reason. they changed the program to make it more apealing...they allow u a window to place yourself. if u don't place yourself they place you.
i think it is a terrible program..my friend is in it..she gets zero support and the staff is not nice to her. she was placed in a self contained room and had no clue what to do.
from what i hear the fellows get a bad rap from their peers because they lack in training and their masters are being paid for..and they start at the same salary....therefore they are resented.

unfortunatly i have not heard better...

This was not my experience, although I can imagine it would be true. You will get as much support as any rookie teacher - which is more a comment about the DOE than the Fellows program. Some schools provide lots of support for new staff, some do not. As for resentment, that will also vary according to the building you are in. I didn't have any problems with my colleagues.

Joining the Fellows means that you are committed to teaching in an underperforming school. This is where teachers are needed most. It isn't an easy way to begin a teaching career, but I have been teaching for 4 years now and I do not regret joining. Like I said, FM me with any questions you have. Good luck!
