Right, they shouldn't be affected, unless they go out on sympathy. This could also relate to other unions (other rail, bus, etc.) but you will not know until you hear it on the news.

Anyone in the city can call 311 (or 212-New-York) to get up to date information. But the best bet is to just listen to the news....and hope for the best!

Great info!

They will be running, but trains will be cancelled and there will be lots of delays and overcrowding because they will be taking cars off trains to provide shuttle service from Queens into Manhattan. Metro North will be doing the same thing.

New York City travel alert: Possible transit strike beginning Fri., Dec. 16

New York City’s transit contract with TWU Local 100 and/or ATU Local 726 expires at midnight, Thursday, December 15. The potential exists for union members to initiate labor actions up to and including full shutdown of New York City transit subways and buses beginning Friday, December 16 (12:01 a.m.)

All commuters and travelers to and from the New York City area can expect commuting challenges and traffic delays in the event of a transit disruption. All employees should make every effort to come to work. Please plan ahead and research alternate transportation options in preparation of a strike Friday morning.

What to expect

All subway and most bus service will be interrupted in the event of a transit strike. Although New York taxicab service and car service will still be available, they will be impacted by increased demand and traffic delays. Car traffic will likely increase as commuters normally using public transit will instead drive into work. In addition, a number of streets will be closed to all but emergency vehicles.

About car service
To increase passenger capacity, New York Car Service vendors will be permitted to operate as a New York taxi and pick up passengers without advance reservations. As a result, this will limit the amount of reserved cars available to JPMC and employees must expect irregular operations (i.e., cannot guarantee availability of cars, or accurate estimate of pick-up times).

Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC)-licensed taxis and livery vehicles will be allowed to pick up multiple passengers in a single trip. In addition, livery cars and commuter vans will be allowed to pick up passengers at bus stops where bus service is not in operation and at Park-and-Ride locations and carpool staging areas.

Taxis and livery cars will operate on a modified fare schedule based upon the zone of travel. Fare structures have also been set for commuter vans, and trips to and from Manhattan to area airports. The fare structure for trips to Newark Airport and all destinations outside of New York City will remain unchanged.

What you can do
Allow extra time for travel. Regardless of which type of transportation you take to commute into or out of the New York City area, allow plenty of extra time to reach your destination.
Take alternative transportation. To reduce congestion, commuters should consider alternative transportation, especially during rush hours. The city encourages walking or biking, carpooling, or using unaffected transportation providers such as taxis, livery and other for-hire vehicles, commuter vans, ferries, trains and commuter buses.
Hail a taxi rather than reserving a car. If you need a car, we recommend hailing a taxi or car. Travel Services doesn’t recommend attempting to make a reservation, as availability will be significantly reduced. In the event of a strike, all licensed for-hire vehicles will be allowed to pick up passengers on the street, at bus stops and at carpool staging areas.
Use transportation services unaffected by the strike. Transportation services that are expected to operate normally during a work stoppage include:
MTA Long Island Railroad
MTA Metro-North Railroad
MTA Staten Island Railway
MTA Long Island Bus
PATH
NJ Transit (commuter rail and bus)
DeCamp Bus (New Jersey)
Amtrak
AirTrain
Westchester County Bee-Line Bus
Staten Island Ferry. Peak service on the Staten Island Ferry will be extended in the morning from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and in the evening from 2:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Parking lots in and around the St. George Terminal will be restricted to vehicles with four or more passengers only.
Private ferry services. The city has also requested private ferry operators extend peak service to accommodate staggered work schedules and additional riders.

Use bicycle and pedestrian access. Residents and commuters are encouraged to walk or bike, especially during rush hours. Bike racks will be available at 270 Park Ave., 4 New York Plaza and I Chase Plaza.

The following bridges into and out of Manhattan offer designated bike and pedestrian lanes:

Broadway Bridge Manhattan Bridge Washington Bridge
Henry Hudson Bridge Third Ave. Bridge Williamsburg Bridge
Macombs Dam Bridge Triborough Bridge
Madison Ave. Bridge University Hts Bridge

Follow driving restrictions. The city will enforce HOV 4 (four or more passengers) restrictions for traffic traveling into Manhattan south of 96th Street from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m., Monday-Friday, on the following roads:

Major roads TO – FROM
Belt Parkway
4th Avenue to Gowanus Expressway, merge at 60th Street

Brookyn-Queens Expressway
Gowanus Expressway to the Manhattan Bridge

Bruckner Expressway
Bruckner Interchange to the Triborough Bridge

FDR Drive
Harlem River Drive from E. 125th Street to E. 96th Street

Gowanus Expressway
92nd Street to Brooklyn-Queens Expressway Interchange (bus/HOV EZ-Pass lane for buses and emergency vehicles only)

Harlem River Drive Dyckman Street to FDR Drive at E. 125th Street

Henry Hudson Parkway Mosholu Parkway. to W. 72nd Street

Long Island Expressway Grand Central Parkway to Queens-Midtown Tunnel
(bus/HOV EZ-pass lane for buses, emergency vehicles only)
Prospect Expressway Church Avenue to the Gowanus Expressway

If there is a strike tomorrow do you think that bosses would understand their employees not coming in? For those who have to commute from LI? and take a subway?

my boss pointed out that the LIRR is working perfectly fine and I can expense a taxi to and from work from Penn...

I was hoping he'd just tell me to work from home!

We were told that if we 'called' in it would be taken from our vacation days....

I'll do the best to make it into work...

They are closing my office tomorrow if there is a strike. I am absolutely shocked! And if it continues next week and we can make it in, we get an extra vacation day for each day we come in. Those who can't come don't get penalized.

I think the head of HR must be in the holiday spirit or something...when I read the email I almost fell out of my chair.
