NYC Visit Help

My BM is coming in from Buffalo for a weekend visit - and to interview for a medical rotation here. She'll be her for a couple days and has no idea what she wants to see or do. I will admit that I totally take for granted what we have here so I am at a loss - what show I take her to do and see? Any suggestions?

Re: NYC Visit Help

Do one of those bus tours around the city! FH and I keep wanting to do it but since we live here, keep putting it off. You can find out about it at nyc.com (I think) You should definitely do touristy stuff. It is the kind of thing you need to do at least once!!

Re: NYC Visit Help

When my friends come in from Rochester we go to the Statue of Liberty, a walk down 5th Ave (they wanted to take a picture in front of Tiffanys), some cool bars in Soho, shopping at St. Marks, etc.

Re: NYC Visit Help

You might want to do the ferry to the Statue of Liberty or Elis island - but keep in mind in order to go into the statue you need to make a reservation a few days before. They sell out of the day passes within the first 1-2 hours of opening.

or ... There's the Beast - it's a 30 min ride around the bottom of manhattan on a super fast speed boat.

or ... Times Square at night is always fun

or ... I recently did the Empire state building & it was an amazing view but I felt like we waited on one line & then another...

or ... South Street Seaport, walk through Central Park, Rockefellar Center, shops on West Broadway in SoHo, TKTS booth at South Street Seaport has a short line and half off broadway shows...

or ... there's Lond Island - the beach just to check it out, Freeport is a cute area.

Re: NYC Visit Help

Those bus tours are fun.. we did them in May when my DH's brother & sister in law came up. The downtown tour was fun but we REALLY liked the uptown tour- make sure you go early b/c you can hop on and off the busses to check things out!

Re: NYC Visit Help

I 2nd the bus tour.

I also love walking around Greenwich Village, Soho, and walking over the Brooklyn Bridge and around Brooklyn Hts.

But with the weekend looking cruddy that might not be an option.

Would she be into the Museum? Nat'l History Museum?

Re: NYC Visit Help

Wow! Thanks for all the great ideas - definitely want to look into the bus tour. I see them all the time near the Empire State Building - sounds like it might be fun! I also like the ideas about walking around 5th Avenue to see the stores, Rockefeller Plaza, Grand Central...and even wandering over to the South Street Seaport! This should be fun! I know she is going to be amazed to see that the city is still pumping even late into the night...very different than Buffalo.

Does anyone know how to go about viewing Ground Zero? FH and I never went over after 2001 but I think she wants to see it.

I've haven't been down there in a while but it was just fenced in and you were able to stand by the fence and read different plaques with the names.

I'm not sure if anything is changed. You can't go down inside

I don't work down there anymore so I'm not sure of trains but I think you can take -

QM1A express bus
E train to Chambers
or the 1 and 9 from Penn to Chambers

just double check with the downtown folks

Just take the W/R to Cortlandt- when you go upstairs there it is.
