Ok, I knew what FH was getting into when he signed up but what the ffffff -- why is the pay so freakin low and what is up with the new contract?
There is hardly any overtime because the stations have been flooded with rookies straight out of the academy . I was trying to be understanding but now I'm just getting annoyed -- I feel like the wedding expenses are taking a backseat.
so, basically, he is putting his life on the line for PEANUTS. This is such crap!

i have no idea how much NYPD makes, but I thought it was relatively good pay? i guess it might be because of overtime?
I'm sorry you have to deal with this now... hopefully it will get better

I know its nuts!!! However, once he gets situated and settled the money will come through overtime and then he can look into a transfer somewhere. For example, detectives make a lot of overtime...so maybe look into that within the next 2-3 yrs....it will get better....hey it cant get any worse then what it is now!\ Hang in there

He transferred from the FDNY!!!!! He told me he wanted to do it because there are more opportunities in the NYPD. I am trying to be supportive because it's what he really wanted but I feel like he didn't think it through. I also feel like he's a little resentful because I make a lot more than he does right now -- but I've been teaching for 10 years.

thank you -- I know it will get better with time but I think that a huge part of me feels like once you hit your 30's it's too late to be jumping careers -- especially when you are about to get married, buy a house and start a family.
I hate to sound selfish but seriously -- what about me? What about our plans? Everything has to be put on hold now and I'm really pissed
I hear you I have a few friends that are cops and it is so hard. Things should pick up once baseball starts. That's how my friend paid for his wedding he thanks the Yankee games for paying for his. All NYC jobs pay like C R A P, it's hard working for NYC and trying to live here. Sorry I had to do a little vent also. The 2 of us work for NYC can't you tell.

i agree with tori... I'm a NYPD cop...thankfully I got on before we sold our unborn...but once 4/2/08 comes the money will start coming in....there's a thing called PAID DETAIL....33 an hour not much but the yankees hire NYPD as private security....I AM COUNTING DOWN THE DAYS... also see if you FH wants to try to get a mutal transfer with someone to a busy house... I'm in an 'A' house and I get 30-40 hours a month....

I understand my FH is also NYPD. Pay increases come slowly and even when they reach top pay its not incredible, however you can live off of it. Once he is past the early stages and is settled in a precinct it will get better. Overtime is defintiely where the money is at. We just did our taxes and my FH made well over the base salary through overtime. However there is a cap on overtime through paid details. I know its hard, but it can work out. I have been teaching for 8 yrs and he pulled in more money than me this year. The flip side however is that you don't see them much. Sometimes he doesn't come home for days straight. See if he can get on midnights that is what FH does. This way even when he makes an arrest it winds up being overtime b/c they have to wait for the ADA's to come to work in the morning before they can talk to them about the arrests. Plus everything like court for example winds up as overtime for them as well.

Im NYPD too..first your FH is crazy to leave FD for PD, FD is the best part time job in the world lol just kidding...I left teaching for NYPD...i gave up $$$ and summers, holidays, and weekends off. Yes the pay *****, especially the rookies pay...Guys in the academy take home 300 dollars a week. But there are plenty of ways to make money on this job. Like the other girl suggested he could do Paid Detail. Its EASY money 33 bucks an hour and you are a glorifed security guard. You get to pick your own days and hours. Next, if he is in a busy command, which i am assuming he is cause thats where most rookies went, he needs to start making some arrests and get some arrest overtime!! Your FH is still a rookie, he will figure out the system soon enough. The new contract will be coming down soon and retro pay should be here before the summer. Before you know it your FH will be at top pay (which isnt great but with the new contract should be better). Plus they are giving out Sergeant tests like once a year now so tell him to start studying. He wont be eligible to take it til he has 3 years on and cant get promoted til he hits 5 but he could still start studying now! Also once he has 2 years on he can start putting in for details such as narcotics...they make a lot of overtime...but then again if he works a lot of OT you ll never see him! MY FH is NYPD too and he does like 60 hours of OT a month9 hes a squad detective though)...plus paid detail! So we dont see each other that much! (but i like it that way lol)

I'm defnitely talking to him about paid detail tonight when he gets home. He says he asks for overtime and they offer some but it's for 'time' and not pay. Should he go for that/? Is it worth it?
Thanks everyone for being so encouraging -- I'm at my wits end

Time is good for when they need days off -- they can use that in addition to vacation days. However, you don't get paid. You are just storing hours to use if you need time off. I know right now if my FH's precient they have been really on thier case about how much overtime they are getting with arrests and such. When the spring/summer comes there tend to be alot more paid details...parades and street fairs. He should start hearing about those within the next couple of months. Try to hang in there
