Morning ladies!

Probably since I met FIL's I've been trying to make a good impression and impress them. It's important to me that FH's family likes me. FMIL told me as long as I make FH happy, that is all that matters to them all.

My question: For those who have met FIL's. When you met them for the first time or when you see them do you ever try to go out of your way to impress them?

EDIT: Sorry, I didn't mean like act like you were different. I meant did you dress up a bit? Bring them a bottle of wine? Something like that.

Eh, I'm not sure if I really went totally out of my way. I just acted like myself. I think I brought a cake over or something for dinner. But I just feel like there's no sense in being fake or doing stuff you normally don't do to impress someone (not just the FIL) because then you either have to come clean or put up with that charade forever.

I first met FMIL in the driveway of their house when FH and I were dating for about 3 weeks. We weren't even 'official' yet. It was random and I wasn't expecting it. I don't remember the first time I met FFIL.

I definitely didn't try impressing anyone. They are also the type of people that probably wouldn't be impressed by anything. I was just my normal nice courteous self. FH and I live with them in the basement apartment so if I HAD tried to impress them... I'd be exhausted trying so hard all the time. FMIL has told me on more than one occasion that I'm her favorite in terms of her daughter/sons in law :)

FH brought me to meet his parents about 3 weeks into dating. I don't really remember much of it because I was nervous, but they just loved me. I think they were just so excited that FH found someone and he had told them about me so they were very accepting from day one. I am glad they like me, but I still just act like myself.

I first met my FI when FH and I were living in TX. We had driven 6 hours to Joplin, MO (where they live) in a heat wave with no a/c and I was a wreck. It was FH's birthday weekend, so I'd made a cake and the icing was all melty by the time we got there lol. I was myself, only more quiet. But that's how I usually am with new people. I had brought a bottle of wine, but didn't know that they don't drink wine. They were a little weird with me at first because they thought I was an 'uppity city person,' but I think they like me now.

I first met my FMIL about 5 months after we started dating. I brought her cookies I had made from scratch that FH wound up eating 99% of. I met my FFIL and his wife after 7 months of dating and they loved me without me doing anything. His wife actually took me shopping and told me that she never had a daughter so she hoped that I would become the closest she ever got. Now that FH and I are engaged, I call her 'Mama Vicky' and she couldn't be happier about it.

I first met my FH in high school, so I've known his parents for awhile now. I usually do things like load the dishwasher for his mom after dinner and stuff like that to just help out around the house. But I've known them for so long now and I am over their house so much that they pretty much are like my parents already.

I met FFIL in a bar one night randomly when I was meeting FH for a drink when we were dating a little over a year..It was very relaxed and I am not even sure he realized I was his sons GF.. ( we never introduced eachother as BF/GF unless someone asked until we got engaged)As far as FMIL goes Kev tried to introduce me to her a few times before we got engaged but it never worked out then the day he asked my dad for permission to marry me, we found out his mom was on the beach so we suprised her with meeting me and the news.. since I met them both in such relaxed situations I dont think I ever went out of my way to impress them, it comes very naturally..

This...

We met and I had just turned 19. He didn't bring me home like, 'hey mom and dad, this is my future wife!' he brought me home because he lived at home and what else were we going to do! lol. So it was very casual and not a formal meeting. But I do remember the first time I ate dinner there during the week, it was spontaneous, and only a week or two after meeting... She made pasta (lol). After dinner I cleared the table and did dishes with FMIL.

Since then I basically have grown up in that house; FIL's have seen me at my best and worst, down to me being sick with a migraine making me toast, lol... anything and everything! They truly are my second set of parents!

Yeah I'm kinda in the same boat as Stephanie. We were in high school so there was never this 'meet my parents' set up thing. It was kind of more like, 'Who is this girl you've been hanging out with? Is she your girlfriend?' It was definitely more organic than a planned out meeting.

No trying to impress, what you see is what you get. I met FMIL about 3 weeks after starting to date FH

I still haven't met my FMIL or FBIL. FMIL is elderly and lives in Puerto Rico. We haven't been able to afford to fly down there or take time off at the same time. FMIL refuses to fly here unless she has $10k in cash to bring and spoil her grandchildren. FBIL is a 'putz' according to FH, and I'm not missing much.

First time I met them I made dessert cause fmil invited us over for dinner. I didn't really go out of my way I was brought up raised that when your invited somewhere you ask if they need anything and or bring something. So I usually bring food whenever I am invited anywhere.

I Met FMIL & FSFIL when I was totally not expecting to. I was meeting FH to go to an Islanders game with friends and he was like 'Oh my mom wants to meet you' lol I was like 'ummm...' So I was totally caught off guard and not prepared.

When I met FFIL & FSIL we went to eat at a restaurant. I was super nervous. Not really to meet FFIL but to meet FSIL. I went on a date with a guy in the past and he had 3 evil (and I mean EVIL) sister so I was really scared to meet her. Everything went really well though & I totally LOVE FSIL, shes great.

I didn't bring anything when I met any of my inlaws.

I met FMIL and FFIL a few weeks after we started dating. I went over there for dinner and I brought a bottle of wine. I was super nervous but they were very sweet. I am who I am so I didn't put on a facade, I was just me and I definitely felt welcomed into the family. I love his parents, his mother passed away but I felt a connection with her and everyone says I am just like her which is such a compliment. His father is definitely a big part of our lives and a huge support in our lives. He is my dad too! Our relationship is great.

Fh warned me that his sister hated all of his girl friends so I was super nervous to meet her. We dated for about 3 weeks then he actually asked me to be his girl friend (I really didn't think people were still asked that lol). The next day he called me in the morning saying he was coming to pick me up for breakfast and we were meeting his sister there. She was actually really nice and pleasant. I met FMIL when FH took me to see one of the Twilight movies. I was no exaggeration 2 minutes late and he was calling me asking where I was so naturally I was nervous I screwed up already! But his mom was a sweetheart! I honestly can't remember the first time I met FFIL ....woops lol

I never went out of my way to impress them. The first time I met them was about about 2 months after we started dating and FH wanted to take me into the city to see the tree. Once we got to the train, I decided it was too cold and I didn't want to go so we went back to his house. We ended up hanging out with his parents for the rest of the night drinking wine and playing games and it was a lot of fun!

I also lucked out because they weren't fond of his ex. They've told me on numerous occasions and also told my parents that they're so happy he's with me, so I never really felt like I had to change who I am to impress them. I have a very close relationship with his family, especially with his mom and sister. We hang out a lot and I consider them my family. I definitely lucked out having such wonderful in-laws.

We'd been dating for almost three months before I met my FILs. It was going to be Thanksgiving, and since my parents are not here, I had nowhere to go. When Adam invited me to Thanksgiving dinner at his mom and grandma's house, I totally thought he felt bad coz I'd be alone on Thanksgiving. After a lot of convincing that he wanted me to meet them, I agreed. But I was so nervous to meet his family, because i knew I really liked this guy. I definitely did dress up and I was so nervous. But the minute I met them, they were so nice that they put my mind at ease.

I definitely didn't go out of my way. I was only 18 at the time, so by that point I wasn't well-versed in making an impression, LOL. Even now, I don't go overboard. I'm just myself. They seem to love me that way.

My FH's parents are sorta separated (weird situation) so when I met them separately I was just myself, I did buy his mom a candle from bath & body just because I don't like going to someone's house for the first time empty handed..and his dad I brought a bottle of chivas that he likes lol
