Hello everyone, looks like it's going to rain today .
FH and I are currently looking at apartments to rent.
Which brings me to today's question: What type of place do you and FH want to ultimately own? What type of accommodations are you living in now, or if not living together yet, in the near future?
We found a studio apartment we can afford together, it just doesn't have a dishwasher, washer or dryer.I honestly thought I could never live without these things! But, at the moment it's all we can afford and it's better than living in the car.
Ultimately, FH wants to own a house, I like townhouses.
Right now we live in his parents basement which is almost a full apartment. It has everything but a kitchen so I just use the upstairs. It works for us right now because it allows us to put away for the wedding and a house and allows us to really focus on saving for our future.
Ultimately... FH wants to build me a house. He wants to build a house that is made out of shipping containers and it will be almost completely made out of renewable materials and almost totally 'green'. We want to buy a condo first which will allow us to look for the area we want. He would like to buy a house that has a full basement that's foreclosed on that we can just tear down build up on.

We have our own place in a two family home, and plan on buying it when our landlady moves to Puerto Rico. She told us a couple of weeks ago that she's going to put it on the market, but wanted to give us first dibs. Our apartment is 2 bedrooms, while hers downstairs is 3. We'll move in there, and rent out the upstairs apartment.

Right now, we have a small house with a small yard...we bought it because it was 3 blocks away from my parents' house. It was a total gut job and FH had to tear everything out so it was stripped down to the studs. We replaced all the windows, siding, flooring, sheetrock, and every part of the kitchen and bathroom. So, everything is to our taste and I love that. It will be hard to leave this house because we have made so many memories here, and because my dad worked side by side with FH to basically rebuild it, so for me it will be heartbreaking to sell--but that is our eventual plan. We're getting quotes for finishing/dormering the attic and adding another bathroom upstairs.
In about 5 years or so, we are going to look for something bigger, a little further out on the island. And in 17 years (and counting), when FH retires, we are moving to the South (TX or Arizona--somewhere dry) and buying a ranch--ideally with space for a big garage/shop for him and a pottery studio for me. That is the dream at least lol.
@katielynn - I love the idea of building a house from shipping containers. I work with green roofs, so I've had to learn a lot about sustainable construction. It's awesome that your FH wants to build something like that for you!

We bought our home at the end of 2011, completely renovated it, and moved into the house labor day weekend of 2012. It is a cape but has 4 bedrooms, 3 full baths, living room, dining room, eat in kitchen, full basement and is on a big lot for Nassau. It is something we made our own, and can stay there for years to come, or until we outgrow it (if that happens). I am also happy we chose to move in together before getting married.

Right now we live in an awesome 1 bedroom apartment thats barely attached to our landlords. It was newly renovated when we moved in over a year ago and our bedroom is bigger than most apartments and it's upstairs! it's also the only area that has carpet so we have wood and tile downstairs. I honestly don't think we could get a better deal anywhere on the island when it comes to renting an apartment..
we definitely want a house, probably 4 bedrooms and 2 bath (one being the master suite) we love property but lush with lots of green and space for a pool. We are thinking of moving to Florida so that would give you an idea of the open concept we truly love.. that would also give us space for a horse which is something I really want one day if time and space allows!
I too am glad we moved in before getting married. It gives you time to get used to it even though FH and I ending up just spending so much time together it didn't make sense to have 2 apartments.

Right now we currently do not live together but we will be moving in together sometime in the beginning of August. My uncle has an apartment in his home(upstairs) that he is completely renovating for us! Brand new cabinets, granite, tile & wood floors, carpet, the whole nine. Its really exciting. We plan to stay there about 2 years and then hopefully buy a home in Nassau, preferably massapequa. FH works for ConEd in brooklyn so moving further east or out of state is out of the question. I am a LI girl so I really want to stay in Nassau.

We currently live in a semi-basement two bedroom 1 bathroom apartment. Our landlord's house is attached to our apartment, but we have a separate yard and entrance, and all the privacy we could need. Ideally, we do want to move into a nice house, maybe 4 bedrooms, 3 baths. FH definitely wants a room he can make into his man cave since he's big into video games and sports. I want an office to work and grade papers, etc. We won't be able to start looking for new places for at least the next 2-3 years though, since I am still in grad school, and we will move wherever I get a job. We're hoping it's somewhere where the cost of living isn't so high, definitely a good school district for the (future) kids.

Right now FH and I live in a studio with a large sleeping loft, so kind of studio/1-bedroom situation. We will be moving on August 1 back to a one-bedroom, thankfully! Our current apartment is very renovated and new, and we thought that sacrificing a *real* bedroom would be worth it for these amenities - definitely not the case! However, we did need to make sure that our next apartment still had a dishwasher since it's super difficult to come back from that
We plan to live in the city for another ~5 years and will eventually buy a house on Long Island. Four bedrooms with 2.5 baths would be perfect. I'd definitely be open to completely renovating a home but I want it to already have nice curb appeal - preferably a colonial!

We bought a center hall colonial a little over three years ago. It has four bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms, and it's perfect for us to have a family here. We've been remodeling it and making it exactly what we want so we're really happy here.
FH and I live in a really nice 1-bedroom apartment. It's got a lot of closets and open space, a big kitchen, a dressing room outside the bathroom, and a balcony. I LOVE it! The only small downside is that it's an upstairs apartment, which makes it a pain to carry my bike up and down when I want to ride it. Our complex also has a laundry room, gym, and pool. It's cozy there.
Our goal is to buy a house sometime in the next 14 months or so. I think we have different ideas about the kind of house we want. I want an outdoor porch (which he could always build if the house didn't have it) and I want the inside to feel open and bright. I don't want a small house, but that's all we can afford right now, I think. I definitely want 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms (a master bathroom would be awesome).

Currently FH and I live with my parents in Massapequa. We are in the process of buying a house in Bayport. We signed the contract and will hopefully be closing in the next month or two! It's a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom house with a nice inground pool! Can't wait to move in!!

About 5 years ago, I asked FH if he wanted to move in together and get an apartment, he said no let's buy a house. I called the real estate agent to get the ball rolling (thinking it would take a long time!) within two months we were in our house. I love our home, it has 4 bedrooms, huge dining room, eat in kitchen, living room with fireplace, only one bathroom as of now and a pretty killer backyard with in-ground pool!

FH & I live in a 1 bedroom 1 bath apartment and for now it is perfect. It has a big bedroom with his and her closets, galley kitchen, large living room and dining area along with closets for storage and it is in a complex that has basketball courts, tennis courts, playground, pool, gym and laundry center. Everything we need, we have. I would personally love a washer/dryer in unit so I can't wait for that!
Our plan is to look into buy houses right after we get back from our honeymoon. We are interested in a minimum of 3 bedroom 1.5 bath and want to stay in Suffolk county. We are in Selden now and are considering moving closer west but we shall see!

Currently, FH and I live in a 1 bedroom 1 bath apartment. It's very spacious and perfect for us and our dog. We actually just signed a Contract for the home we love. It's 4 bedroom, 2 baths, newly renovated kitchen, 2 car garage and big living space. It doesn't have a dining room but we're looking to convert rooms to make one. The backyard is an ok size, not huge but not small- I would eventually like to put in a semi-in ground pool but we're going to have to wait a little bit to do that!

FH and I moved in together right before we got engaged, we have a small one bedroom with 1/2 a kitchen (no stove) and no dishwasher or washer/dryer. I'ts really a new experience since I came from a big house rental with all the amenities and tons of privacy. The biggest adjustment really is that the apartment is in his parents house and there is no privacy. Zero. Zip. Nada. Like My FiLs know what I'm having for dinner, next week. lol
I can't complain too much because we do pay very little in rent, and that has given us the ideal situation to save up for our wedding. I for sure look forward to moving out after the wedding, and hopefully buying a home after that.
I don't really need anything too big or too fancy at this point, just all mine lol

FH and I currently live together and we're renting a two bedroom apartment. I don't think we really know what we're looking to move into in the future, only that we want to probably move into a house in 5 years or so from now. Hopefully nothing too big because I don't want to be cleaning all the time lol

Right now we live separately...part time hah. I stay at Joe's house more than my own, though. We can't really rent, and almost refuse to pay someone else's mortgage for them.
We want a nice house with at least 3 rooms, a garage and a basement. NO POOL!! FH wants a big enough backyard to have a little 'sanctuary' for his huge sulcata tortoise that will outlive us AND our children!!

Right now we are both living at home. I come from a very old school Irish Catholic family and my parents only request was that we didn't move in together until we were engaged and since they do everything for me, I wasn't opposed. Once we got engaged we started looking at places and decided that we live close enough to one another and both have privacy at home, so we just stuck it out to save some money. However, now that it's getting closer I really can't wait for us to find a place of our own and see him every day!
We're looking to rent in either in Nassau or Queens. I'd like to live somewhere with good night-life since that would be the opposite of what we'd be looking for when we buy a house. Our goal is that hopefully we'll only rent for a year or two and then buy. We've been discussing more and more moving a little north of the city where you can get so much more for your money, but nothing is set in stone and we're both very close to our families so we'll see. We're both NYS employees, so as long as we can transfer jobs, we're good!

We are currently renting a one bedroom, one bathroom apartment with the bedroom being upstairs. There is plenty of room for us, our cat and dog. We are renting in my friend's house. It is a mother daughter house, so we have the whole left side of the house. It is pretty nice with hardwood floors throughout, but no dishwasher or washer dryer. We have access to pool and backyard, with our own deck in back.
We probably plan on staying here for at least 2-3 years and save up for a house in the meantime. We would not be able to afford a house on long island, so we plan on moving somewhere cheaper. We were thinking Arizona, New Hampshire, or Connecticut. We would like to be in the vicinity of the east coast since my family is on long island, but we will see! FH wants a decent amount of land, which you can't get on LI.
