We are going there but have never been there before. I have heard great things. My friend went and loved it. I spoke to a couple of brides on here who really liked it as well.
I stayed there christmas time 07 with FH and i really didn't love certain things about it. The food was not good at all and the drinks were weak and they only offered one type of beer which was awful. We are not big drinkers at all but we found ourselves going to other hotels at night to pay for some decent drinks. The casino is very old and most machines were busted. The rooms weren't bad but the inside and outside of hotel is not as nice as others. The things I did like about it was its location on the beach and the quality of the beach. They also offer floats for the ocean which was a huge convenience and they had beach volleyball games going on all the time which FH loved. If you have any extra money to put towards the trip stay at the Marriott or Hyatt i've also stayed at both those and like them a lot more

FH and I are in the same boat. We are between the Occidental and the RIU. The Riu we just heard has been completely re-done and it is a little more expensive. I think FH is leaning towards the Riu though b/c hes heard some nice things about it. Have your travel agent look there too. Just for a comparison
The Riu had just opened the week we were booking our trip and were hesitant to book because sometimes a new hotel needs a year or so to work out their kinks and run smoothly but when we were there we took a walk over to check it out and it was insane!! so big so nice and seemed very luxurious!
There ar emany people who stayed at the Occ & loved it. But i canttell u for myself sorry.
My FMIL/FFIL went there and they loved it... but they did say that the RIU was much better. FSIL also said that the RIU was better

We stayed at the RIU..it was wonderful. I've heard mixed reviews about the occidental.
The RIU opened in 2007...so I'm not sure what you mean by it not being opened a year yet.
The drinks were great, the staff was amazing. The food was good..not wonderful, but good. The buffets were really good.
