Wow!!! Hi I am Sherrita. This a great thread. I am getting married 8/19/11, we just booked the Douglaston Manor. My major concern were my hair and make-up. I signed up to go the Circle Of Sisters bridal expo in hopes of finding people who would be more familiar with our hair and skin tones. The expo is 3/27/10. I am definitely going to see what's out there and I appreciate hearing all of your recommendations. I am not jumping the broom in my ceremony.

I was wondering what DJ's that you ladies have either booked or looked at. I'm lost when it comes to DJ's because I want a HOT Dj that will have everyone on the dance floor.

So...what has everyone been up to? Does anyone have makeup artists or hairstylist that they can share?

Using my cousin Belinda. She is the best, and she used to do supermodels hair before she and husband decided it would be best for her to be home with the kids more. Now she works in a salon in Smithtown.

Re: Official African American Brides Thread
It really is a struggle for us in this department. I really wish that LIW's would make a chat for the different races so that you can connect to other brides searching for the same thing.I think it would be a great idea for us to list the vendors we have booked so far (DJ, Stylist, Makeup, etc..).
These vendors can be kind of tough, especially when you need to find vendors that can work for African American brides/couples.
So far I'm clueless as to a GOOD makeup artist/hair stylist.
And as far as DJ's go, we need a DJ that will have everyone on the dance floor. If i could afford DJ Camillo from Hot 97 I would..lol

I am totally clueless as far as makeup. I don't want to end up looking like a clown. lol. We went with parties alive for the dj. I really wanted a West Indian dj who knows all the classic and lastest soca, kompa, calypso, reggae and zouk hits, but I couldn't find any, and Rich from parties alive has been awesome to work with and the price he gave us really can't be beat. I figured I can include all of our favorite Caribbean songs on our must play list, and just and it would still be good.

Thats what FH and I are looking for. FH is Haitan/ Venezuelan and I'm American so we need a mix of everything. I want everything from Soca to Kompa to Reggaeton to Al Green to Stevie Wonder...lol.
I want a fun wedding and the DJ is something that is such a huge element for my wedding..

Re: Official African American Brides Thread
My friend is doing my makeup. She's a make up artist/esthetician and she's great. I can pass on her contact information when anyone is looking to book. Her site is under construction but there are some pics...abebibeauty.comMy fiance is Haitian so I really wanted an officiant who speaks Creole so that we could have a nice prayer or verse reading in Creole for his family visiting from out of the country etc. It doesn't look like that's going to happen, so I'm planning on asking his sister to read something during the ceremony.
In terms of DJ, we booked with Starlight Entertainment. They seemed very comfortable when we were discussing the need for Kompa and Zouk. In addition, I'm having his sister and brother in law make a list of must hear songs so we can provide it to the DJ...even though he said they already have a collection of songs.
Does anyone know if there are specific Haitian wedding customs or traditions?

Re: Official African American Brides Thread
I searched online for some customs/traditions involved with Haitian weddings but didn't really find anything. I'm American and FH is Haitian so I wanted to include some elements in the wedding to shine light on his culture...Thanks for the makeup recommendation. have you had any trials with her as of yet? Would love to see pics...
