Officiant doesn't do contracts?

Officiant doesn't do contracts?

So, my fiance and I met with an officiant who is a vendor on here, and has many positive reviews. We decided to book him, and he signed a business card for us with the date/time and such. Then my mom said she wanted him to send us a contract in the mail, so I e-mailed him, and he said he 'doesn't have contracts, never has' but that he could send us a signed letter with all the info. Does anyone see this as a bad sign? I think I should just ask him this, but can anyone think of any reasons why he would do this? Even though I gave him a $50 deposit, I would obviously rather book someone else than take a chance! He mentioned to me at our meeting that if he was to get sick, he has back-up people that he could get to do it, but he said that has never happened before. Great, just makes me wonder why he doesn't have contracts. Do you girls have a formal contract with your officiant? Any and all help is very much appreciated!

I was wondering about this too, I'm eager to hear the responses

Yeah, I'm worried. I hope I get responses! Did your officiant not offer a contract, either? Or one that you spoke to? Maybe it's normal, I'm just not sure and I'd rather not worry!

We didn't book one yet, but we might be using a judge - she doesn't typically do weddings thought so I'm not sure...

I would absolutely make sure that you get a contract for everything. I think if he doesn't 'have any', you could always get a lawyer to draw one up and see if he will agree to it? I think?

Thank you. That's true! I mean, if he doesn't show up, we're not married! He's really the most important part of the day.

Hm, that makes me feel a lot less paranoid! Thank you. I mean, I want to trust him, and I have no reason not to, I just find it kind of strange that I asked and he said that he doesn't have them. But I'm trying to just trust him, given his reviews and reputation.

Always get things in writing. What would the letter include? That sounds like a form of a contract. Maybe see if he can address in the letter that he is agreeing to be at your wedding, date, time place etc...with the cost included.

Even if you trust him, you NEVER know what could happen you know? If suddenly he isn't able to make it because of an emergency, and all of his co-officiants aren't able to make it, if you don't have a stipulation in your contract guaranteeing that SOMEONE will be there to perform the ceremony, what then happens? It might be a long shot of things to go wrong, but like I said, you never really know.
