Approxamtely how much does an officiant charge? I got a quote of $500 from someone I liked, but I find $500 is way to much money for a $20 minute ceremony, is this standard?

Thanks everyone. There seems to be a big range. I really like the one I met with, but I will continue to intervew and compare prices. I need a Spanish speaking officiant, and that is proving more challenging, so I might have to pay a bit more. We'll see!
I have someone you might be interested in. I´ve only communicated to her via email and she seems nice. She is under $300 and she speaks Spanish. If you´re interested FM me and I´ll get her info.

I'm using Father Joe DeVincenzo....we have our first meeting with him this Thursday. It's either $550 or $575...I don't remember exactly. He did 2 diff friends' weddings so I know he does a good job

I think it's a lot of money too..... I know they do more than just be there at the ceremony, but other vendors require prep work too. DJs spend time meeting with you, going over play lists and such, and you can get a basic DJ for 5 hours for $1,000 but for 20-30 minutes it's half the price? Makes no sense to me, that's for sure.
That being said, I know I'm going to wind up paying one of these ridiculously high prices for an officiant. ::sigh::

Re: Officiant Fee
The most Important moments of ones life are often less than 20 mins.......the moment you knew you were in love, the birth of a child, the contract signing of your first home, seeing Rome/The great wall/The pyramids/the Eiffel tower, a loved one returning from war......these things are priceless. This Ceremony IS your wedding, the DJ isn't. Interview as many officiants as it takes and find the one you want to represent your lifetime union to the man of your dreams. When you look back those 20 mins will be the most important to you. Don't get to caught up over the diff between $200 and $500.....think about how much your paying for flowers. If you think of it like this it may be the $175 guy anyway. Just dont forget why we show up that day.

The officiant fee isn't just for 20 minutes, it's also for preparing your ceremony tailored to you and your FH, which can take many hours to do. The 20 minute ceremony is only the final product...hence the fee. She/he also fills out and sends in your paperwork so that you can get your marriage license. We paid $550 for ours and she spent a lot of time with us, writing a personalized ceremony and changing it many times to make us happy lol.
ITA!!!! we're paying $475 for a non-denominational pastor and we're very happy!!! if you're concerned with the price and aren't picky about who performs the ceremony, look for ordained people or judges that can perform the ceremony for you!
