~*~*~*~Ofiicial 08 jewish brides//Checklist~*~*~*~

Since Michelle mentioned there is no official list I figured we could start one. If anyone has any questions/concerns/comments, feel free to ask.

I know there is the mainstream checklist out there but I'm trying to figure out what else we might need for a religious ceremony. I know there is so many things and I don't want to forget anything.

Rabbi/Cantor
Talit
Hebrew names
Kiddush cup
White wine (so you don't spill on dress)
Chupah
Kippahs (yarmulke)/clips/bobbie pins
Ketubah
Glass , bag and some kind of keepsake
Plain wedding band
Challah
Broom or flowered headpiece for mazhinka
Benchers (prayer books)
Vows

Am I forgetting anything?

Here's a pretty good site I found also.

Link

I will update the list if anyone thinks of something I might be forgetting. I figured this would be good for future reference.

Another idea to add to our list, where are you getting everything?

***********************UPDATE**********************
Ok so we met with our rabbi today ...it was an ummmm interesting experience since he has NO clue who I am but I digress. We had no idea what to expect and FH kept on asking me if it would be like the Robin Williams movie License to Wed LMOA.

He suggested us both 'borrowing' rings from family members because it would make them feel inlcluded which was a really nice thought.

Something to keep in mind that we didn't know about...you need to have ALL Hebrew names, myself, FH. my parents and FIL's. Also, our witness's including their fathers.

He requested 2 kiddush cups but i'm not certain why.

Oh and he talked about the auf ruf (no clue how to spell). When I talked to my parents they said that wanted to host one so that will happen the Friday before the wedding.

Something else I learned was that we could write our own vows! I didn't think that was even possible. It's not something i've really seen t other weddings. Unfortunately FH doesn't want to do it.

Plus everything else on this list as well.

Re: Checklist for the Jewish Bride

My list is not nearly that long, but our ceremony is interfaith at the RH, so we're not doing everthing. Also, I'm not that religous so i'm not really aware of everything that you would need. Sorry. I wish I could be more help. The only things I need to get are:

glass
bag for glass
kiddush cup
chuppah
ketubah (if I happen to forget, the rabbit has a simple one with him complimentary)
umm, I think that's it.

I also have to get a unity candle with the 2 taper candles on the side.

Thanks, I love the idea of unity candles, they always look so elegant and romantic.

But that does remind me of something, when we meet with the rabbi I have to ask if we would be doing a candle lighting. If so do I have to buy anything.

You can buy them in the drug store right next to the bobby pins. But, maybe you could get them cheaper at a beauty supply store......

I'd probably get them at the dollar store. I think you can get around 100 of them for just one buck!

Re: Checklist for the Jewish Bride

Tallit
During a Jewish wedding, the groom traditionally wears a tallit -- or prayer shawl -- which is the garment worn during Jewish prayer. In some Jewish traditions, the tallit (or 'talis') is wrapped around both the bride and groom during the ceremony, to symbolize their unity.

i have also heard and think i may do the same.. but the broken glass from the wine glass... i want to save it and put it into a Mezuzah for our house.

not necessarly somethign necessary for the ceremony, buy somethign taken from the ceremony for your home afterwards.

Yeah I saw that in one of the posts the other day. I think we're going to splurge. We'll either do the mazuzah or a frame.

Kinda funny story from during dinner last week. FH's cousin was married 5 years ago. She said she intended on doing the frame but 'forgot.' Plus, she misplaced the glass for several years. Now the company is out of businness so she paid all the money gets nada.

Jenn, Can you help an almost Jewish Bride out? Some definitions please? Are the head pieces what the parents wear for that dance when their child is the last/ only child to get married? Is this all appropriate for Reform Jews?

This is my Mezuzah btw, we registered for it at Bloomingdales, along w/ the Kiddish Cup, and a stunning Menorah

Where are you ordering your yarmukahs frm? What's a fair price? Will I be charged per item? Or do I have to buy them in blocks of a number?

No problem. I'm reform and not extremely religious so i'll try the best I can.

I don't know what the exact word for the headpieces are but yes the mazinkah is the dance for last/only child to get married. Since it applies to both of us. We are the last AND the youngest on both sides. I honestly had never heard of it before we started this whole process and the DJ mentioned it to us n our meeting. He really impressed us which is the reason why we hired them

We don't have a mezuzah at our apartment (yours is really nice tho!). I was waiting until we bought a home to get one. I was thinking about using the shards from the glass and puttting them into one. (I have a pix in my profile).

Also, your FH should have a kiddush cup and tallit from his bar mitzvah.

I haven't really looked into it too much. I was going to wait a few more months before doing anything. There are tons of sites on the internet if you just do a google search. FIL told us to look in the lower east side area. I think that the prices can range.

Here is one site I saw that said $1/ea.
