oh my goodness...

A plane carrying 20 people crashed in Moorea (outside Tahiti) today. It could have been honeymoon travelers just like any of us. They are not sure there were any survivors.

I hope no LIWers were aboard but of course it would be just as terrible if they were complete strangers.

oh no no no!!!!! This is one of my biggest fears about those small planes that travel between islands!!! I was already SUPER nervous about having to get on one of those planes!

I hope somehow all the passengers are ok!!! My prayers go out to them!

A plane has crashed after taking off from the French Polynesian island of Moorea bound for Tahiti, killing up to 20 people.

Nineteen passengers and the pilot were aboard the Air Moorea Twin Otter turboprop aircraft, which crashed into the sea.

Five of the passengers were foreigners, including three tourists and two EU officials.

It is understood the two EC members recently met with French Polynesian President Gaston Tong Sang and were about to return to Europe.

Sandra Rimud from Air Traffic Services in Tahiti said the plane went down at about noon local time (0800 AEST).

'We don't know (why it crashed). We had good weather. The pilot maybe didn't see so good,' she said.

Two helicopters were being used to search for the remaining passengers, said Jacques Witkowski, the secretary-general of French Polynesia's advisory High Council.

Fourteen bodies so far recovered have been taken to a nearby chapel where identification was under way.

The island of Moorea is 17 kilometres from Tahiti.

This was also my fear-- we opted to do the plane transfer b/c I get slight sea sick but I think I want to cancel the plane now

how terrible!!!!

i think most of the LIW girls fly from Tahiti to Moorea, then Moorea to Bora Bora, and then Bora Bora back to Tahiti (not usuall from Moorea to Tahiti) so hopefully it's no one that we know....

but in any case -- it's such a tragedy. i feel heartbroken for whoever was affected by it

Yeah we also have the plane transfer but when I recently saw someone's honeymoon review with a picture of the actual plane, I was SO UPSET - I didn't realize just how small they are! And now this! The ferry ride is only about 45 minutes - but I don' t know if we can switch our flight to the ferry without losing the $ for the flight that we paid.

I hope they figure out what happened. My prayers go out to everyone affected!

sweetie, try to think positive! it'll be okay! i read on cnn:

Air Moorea, a subsidiary of domestic airline Air Tahiti, said it had never had an accident in its 35-year history.

this was just that one time thing!!

How awful...I feel terrible for those peoples families.

I wouldn't worry about the flight. It was a freak accident and we all know that flying is very very safe.
