OH NO!!! Because I am overweight, I can't try on bridal gowns!?!?!?

I was just reading on another board about a girl who went to try on wedding gowns and all the samples were size 8's. They said that they would order a dress for her in her size of course, but how would she know if she liked it or it looked good on her without trying it on?

Does anyone know how this works???

Some places (like Macy's) the dresses are size 10. The assistant pins it together in the back so you can get an idea of what it looks like. You're right, they order your size....

Some people might know of other places (like Davids) that carry plus size....

I hope this helps

Some designers have plus size lines of gowns that I am sure bridal stores carry. Ask for the plus size lines...I think Jasmine and Alferd Angelo have them.

I know at most of the places I went the dresses were sizes 10 and 12. I guess this is an average. Its hard for the smaller girls, too. I happen to be an 8, so it wasnt' too bad for me, but one of my good friends is closer to a 16, and it was a bit tough. If you get a good sales girl to help you they can clip the back to get the closest idea, but some dresses are easier than others to imagine.

Good luck!

P.S. beware side zip dresses.. they are IMPOSSIBLE to imagine because they sit all off center and stuff if they dont fit.

You would be supprised on how they can help you. My mom is overweight...and she always has problems tring on dersses...most of the time they have to pine the dress to her front to show how it looks. Its really does look like she has the dress on. Sometimes I try on the dress to show her the full detail. Its sad that they make the samples so small. My sister who is a 10-12 had problems tring on bm dresses also...I basically had to try them on to see how they fit.
The most important thing is that you are comfortable where ever you go!
I am sure you are going to find the dress of your dreams and look beautiful

I heard that David's Bridal carries dresses in ALL sizes... so you might want to start trying on there, so you can learn what styles look good on you, and which don't... this way when you go to other stores who may not have your size, you won't have to stress as much.

don't worry sweetie!!

All the dresses I tried on were at least a size 12--all the way up to 16plus...
And I'm a six
Try Flowerama...They had an incredibly large selection of larger sizes...

Thanks so much guys!

I mean I am a size 14, I guess in the 'bridal world' thats like an 18 or something around there. So depressing....

but I will listen to your suggestions!

If you are an everyday sized 14 you will probably have no problem. The samples might not zip in the back, but you should be able to get an idea of the style.

Good luck!!!!!

Definitely! I was a 12/14 when I was dress shopping and while the gowns didn't zip, I was in the dress enough to be able get a good feeling about the dress.

And I agree with the above poster that said side zip dresses are impossible to try. I tried one and I couldn't get any idea of what it looked like since the side of the dress was in the front

ALSO!!! Don't forget how much wear-and-tear the samples get... they get reallllly stretched out!!! So what is labeled a 12 or a 14, is probably even bigger than that!!

I am plus size and tried on 6 or 7 dresses at Macy's Bridal Salon in Manhasset

RK Bridal had a lot of dresses, when I went there

I also heard that Liliettes in Baldwin has a decent selection

Most of the dresses that I tried on was a 10/12. Don't get discouraged if they tell you to order well above your actual size. I am a size 2 and it was suggested that I order a size 8. A friend of mine is a size 14 and they made her order a size 20. However, you can sign a waiver to order a smaller size if you disagree w/ their size oredering suggestion.

Their up-size ordering reasoning (does that even make sense?) is to allow ample room int he event that you gain weight. Personally, I think it is because they can charge you more for alterations.

I am a 10 or 12, and I orderd a 16. My friend who was a 14, ordered an 18. Most samples were 10's, adn I could get a good idea of the fit, and the the staff clipped it together for me.
And some dresses have elastic they can stretch across the back and hook together for it to stay on.
The only problem I had was getting into a size 10 sheath.

I only tried one size 16 sample, it was from
the plus section in Estelle's.

I believe the Bridal Suite of Patchogue has a plus size section if needed. The dresses I tried on were a 10 but I agree they're still a very small size 10 !!! We're all in the same boat - you'll find a beautiful dress - enjoy the process of finding the perfect one

Go to Lilletts in Baldwin or the Bridal Plaza in Baldwin....the people who work there are wonderful and they have a variety of sizes you can try on! Don't worry...you will certainly get an idea of how the dress will look.
Good Luck and let us know how it goes!

Fantasia in Rocky Point, and Bridal Suite in Centereach both had a ton to try on....don't fret.

Another post for Lillette's.... I was size 28W when I went to try on, and I must have tried on about 10 dresses, and that was after eliminating 8 or so on the rack that I could see that I wouldn't like!

That is so not true, almost every place I went to had dresses in all different sizes. And I went to about twenty different stores.
