OK another question about apartments in someone elses home
Did you have a lease agreement or was it month by month verbal agreement? The other house we own we rented for a year and we have a lease agreement, but this is a little different because it's in our home...

I did not have a lease. We told her we would stay for a year, we ended up staying 11 months.
Having said that, I always thought she was crazy for not having a lease, if I was looking at that apartment as anything other than incredibly short-term I would have insisted on a lease. I would get one just to protect yourself, especially since this is in your home.

We signed a year lease with our tenants, once that year was up we just let it go month to month.

I'm in an (illegal) apt. in Queens and initially I asked if there was a lease. She said she'd draw one up if I wanted. I decided not to. I been there for 3 years and pay in cash every month. No problems.

We do not have a lease but our landlord said that we can stay for as long as we want.

DH and I used to live in an apt in someones house. We signed a lease for the first year and after that, it was a month by month... The landlord felt at that point he had gotten to know us pretty well, so he wasnt worried about it. If I were you, I would strongly recommend (for your own safety) a lease agreement at least in the beginning. I've heard some pretty bad stories about sketchy tenants...

The first time I rented, it was an apartment (upstairs of a house), since they were some I knew the said not to worry about a lease. I was there for 3 years. We just moved and now are renting a house - we have a lease for a year - we never discussed what happens after the first year.
