Ok so I guess I should have known that at some point during out planning we were going to hit a bump in the road....everything had been going so very smoothly until this morning when I got an email from our photographer.
His wife surprised him with a cruise with two other couples and he will be gone for our wedding date. He says he can have his #1 photographer sub in for us for our wedding day and he also said if we feel at all uncomfortable with this he can see if his wife can change the cruise dates
For now I just responded saying I would have to discuss this with my FH. I have never met this other photographer he is talking about and I have never seen her work. I AM VERY UNCOMFORTABLE WITH THIS. We are paying a lot of money because we wanted him. We loved his personality and his work and he really set us both at ease. I am so upset right now. I know FH will be also. So what do I do?? What do I say to him? Please help me! I am so bummed right now!
UPDATE: So he emailed me back and said he completely understands and that he will have his wife change the dates of the cruise since the final payment has not yet been made. So hopefully this all works out!! Thanks for all your help!

Who is your photog? Maybe other LIW Brides have used him. I would ask to see samples of his work and speak with him. If you really don't like him, I'm sure you can break the contract being that your contract stated a diff. photog. But you may be surprised and like the other guy just as much/more. They say you buy the photos, not the photog.. they are usually comparable.

I am sorry that is just so unprofessional. If you do not want to the search all over again then ask him if he could send you a link with the other photographer work at least about three other weddings he has done to see if you like his style. Other then that I would demand you money back and take your business elsewhere. This is major. I would not trust someone who does something like that. I do not believe his wife surprised him.

wow this is a toughie...i'd see if he can change his trip first since obviously his work means THAT much to you...if its absolutely impossible then maybe you need to go to a plan B?

I would definitely want to see the other photogs work before making a decision. This is such a pain in the butt to have to deal with.

I am soooooo sorry!!!! This S U C k s I would call him and tell him you would like to see the work of the other photog and meet her to see if you will be comfortable with her then tell him you will make a decision.
Btw how stupid is the wife to suprise him when he is in this line of work

I agree.. Def. see the other photographers work and hopefully you will like it, you never know...Its a tough situation, I wish I could offer better advice.

Why don't you go meet with his #1 photographer and see his work? Things like this happen, so I'm sure he has a very reliable backup. If you like his recommendation, you might have nothing else to worry about...and maybe you could even negotiate for some more pics or something!

I guess we will see what he says from there. Then if he cannot change the dates then we will have to see this other photogs work and then if we don't like it then we have start from square 1. FH and I are both so upset right now.

True, but we live in Maryland. And we won't be back on LI till Christmas.

Awww hun, that is horrible! I can't believe this would happen. I would def take a look at the potential sub photographer's work and see if it's what you can work with. I even suggest asking for another set of FREE epics with this person to make sure it's what you want. That stinks that this would happen three months before. The bright side to all this- you are getting married in an off season. If you had to (GOD FORBID) start looking for someone else, I am sure you can find someone.

True, but we live in Maryland. And we won't be back on LI till Christmas.
I suppose I could ask our photographer to send me pics of his #1 photogs work and I guess we could have a phone conference if he can't move the cruise dates....

uh no, his wife needs to change the date of the cruise period the end! I think its kinda unprofessional for him to throw this on your lap.

you should def ask to see this other woman's work and if I were you... I would have her do like free pics for you, maybe like some epics to get a sense of her style and pesonality. Its the least they can do being that you specifically wanted this other guy and if his name is on the contract and he bails out, the contract is void and you can cancel and get your money back. Im sure you will find another photog this late, trust me... the way the economy is Im sure some photogs arent completely booked. You will be fine. Did you like anyone else's style?

WOW that is unprofessional bc honestly he really should not put you in this position. HE should not tell you the situation and leave you with the decision. It puts you in a very awkward situation, on one hand you hired him obviously bc you wanted him to photograph your wedding and its the most important day of your life, and on the other hand now he put you in a situation where you might feel bad having them change their vacation around. BUT his wife really should have checked his calendar before doing any of this, especially in his line of work.

I can understand why you would be so upset because this places you in an awkward position.
However, I always try to look at things from the most positive possible perspective: everything happens for a reason.
But the bottom line is that you are paying a lot of money for HIS work.
I would honestly tell him to change his trip or refund you your deposit. I don't think you will have trouble locating another photographer of equal style and caliber.
