You dont have to. my bm dresses are the same style as my dress.....but I didnt do it on purpose. I guess I just really like that certain style!

I don't think there's any 'rule' about coordinating bm dresses to bridal gowns..they should compliment eachother though (i.e. the bridesmaids dresses shouldn't compete with the bride's gown) I say do what you want, if you like it, thats what matters.
If it makes you feel better, I threw all the bridesmaid 'rules' out the window and everyone gets to pick their own dress, but everyone will coordinate in the same fabric, length, and designer (jim hjelm), and my 2 MOH's are wearing totally different toned Vera Wang dresses. It will be interesting coordinating it all.

My gown is strapless and it so happens that the dresses that I like for BM are strapless but it was not done on purpose...like it has been posted already...I don't think there's a rule that it has to match your gown. I think its based on your choices for your BM to wear. HTH

You can do whatever you want, I think a lot of people might end up coordinating just because they might turn out gravitating towards a style they like. Even if this was a 'rule' (which it isnt) it is your wedding so in the end you do what you want, esp something like this.

I didn't completely get matching dresses but I did get dresses that complimented mine...

It's not a set rule- you can get whatever you want.

i think it's a matter of opinion... i don't think they have to match your dress... i would do whatever makes you and your BMs happy!

You're not an idiot...that's first. Second, I didn't realize that either until I was drooling over my dress once again on Alfred Angelo's website, and on the side it said BMs to match your gown. I went ahead and clicked on it, and sure enough none of mine where there. HA. I don't care...I know that it wil look beautiful just the way it is. Just do what YOU like.

I'm just matching the materials. My dress is satil so I wanted the girls to wear satin as well. It looks nice for pictures

I am not really matching my girls' dresses to mine -- in fact I selected theirs before I found my gown! There are no rules, per se, but i would just keep the overall 'look' the same (if your gown is modern minimalistic I'd keep that silhouette for the BP). I think it's more important to pick out a BM dress that compliments their body types and the theme of the wedding than to mimic the wedding gown. That's JMO though.
