not being sarcastic..
not meant to be cruel..
not to take away from those sufering..

Still Im sure SOMEONE will misinterpret this.

ok. here goes.

If you saw what we all saw on tv for more than a week approaching your own city (the hurricane katrina) If the local authority told you to leave and even told you it was a catagory 5, would you leave?

I ask because almost ALL the interviews I saw here folks who decided to 'ride it out' not so much the poor or couldnt travel. Heck Fat Domino thought to stay and with a legend like that many assumed he would never put himself in danger or his family, folks assumed it was ok to stay. The pictures of the superdome show they could have held more. Even if they couldnt fit in the dome the red cross would have relocated them.

Folks are still in their attics and others knew not to go into attics.

I dunno but maybe its just me, but Id have left.

ALSO does no one know that New Orleans is in a bowl that is below sea level and impossible to reach if flooded and is basically sitting on soaked land (aka Marsh lands and Byous) to begin with which means there was a pretty darn POSITIVE chance of flooding.

I have to ask.

My office mates (long islanders) said 'Its a long walk to the superdome' or 'Well, they don't have cars'.

I find it all very hard to swallow when i see the folks interviewed all seem like they should have and could have left or should have and if they were aware of how severe this would be (which again I reference the WEEK of news coverage) but decided to stay.

My question..

Would you leave NY/Long Island?

I sure as Heck would be in Jersey as soon as it was a few hundred miles out at the LATEST. Most likely Id take a few days off JUST in case, you life just is NOT worth guess you might make it.

Ok, Done venting
Remember I still think NO ONE should suffer for any reason and I feel pretty horrid folks are dead, dying and suffering by the thousands (black and white and asian and man and woman and child all alike).

probably will need Ron to delete this soon

I think they all should have left!!! Poor or not poor. I would have walked to save my family. Now they are crying that we are not doing enough for them. You should have listened to the authorities when they told you to leave.

And YES, we would have left. And we would have taken our pets. So many people left behind there pets

JMO!!

I can't speak for others, but I would get in my car and drive as far as my car could take me. I would not risk it for anything. Personally I would not risk it, especially if I had children w/ me. I don't know what these people's situations were. Not everyone had a car and a lot of people thought the media was exhagerating...and if they just got up and left they would have no place to go.

I just see the stories on the news w/ little babies dying out there and I cry

good to know im not getting blasted

Thanks guys!

to answer my own question..(like you cant guess)

H#ELL yah i'd leave.
I walked from downtown to midtown on a spained ankle, two twisted knees and swollen eyes. I did NOT travel to Queens where i lived.. I went to Jersey. I've seen what a hurricane can do (by the way nyc is due) and I'd be G O N E (gone) before you could even being to warn me to leave!

Yeah, they should have left. But you say that the superdome could have held more. Well, the whole superdome thing turned out to be a disaster and I don't know how more people being there could have possibly been a good thing, in hindsight.

Easy to say except not everyone had transportantion. Some wanted to leave but couldnt...superdome or no superdome.

Evacuating LI...thats hysterical. Have you seen rush hour traffic? It would be impossible. I'd be more likely to get in a boat and row across the Sound before I'd get in my car and drive. God forbid anything like that comes up here, because it will literally be impossible to evacuate the island without probably a weeks notice. IMO.

As some of you know, I live in SC-Hilton Head Island-this place has NEVER been hit by a crazy hurricane-only the rain and wind that follows-I WOULD LEAVE!!!
If it was voluntary evacuation-Im gone....This place would be under water before the hurricane even got here!

I would definitely leave!

I lived in a coastal town in PR when Hugo hit and my family left to stay with my aunt...it was hard as heck sharing water, but we survived major damage. Others weren't so lucky. I too have walked across bridges (once the Williamsburg and once the 59th St. Bridge) and would do so again if needed. What worries me is my cat...I would be crushed if I had to leave him behind.

I recently heard that all roads down there were used to evacuate and that directions were changed. (For example, on the LIE, both sides would be used for Westbound traffic.)

I, too, feel terrible for what they are going through. No one should suffer like that, but you can't fight nature. The tsunami people didn't have notice, these guys did. Have we learned nothing about what water can do?

If the government says to evacuate, it is for a REASON.

I would try to leave before they even told us to leave..I say 'try' because I am not sure I would be successful because as someone pointed out I think it would be difficult to get out of Long Island

Honestly, I'd probably be one of the wait it out people. If the mandatory order came down, then I would, but I wouldn't leave on my own. I'd stay with my home. Stupid, I know....but you just don't think these things will happen to you. After this I would think twice, especially since we are on an island and could therefore easily become isolated. If there were a Category 5 coming our way, I'd get the heck out of dodge.

I agree, but I also think that the minute the evacuation order went out the government should have had beses down there. They knew that 100,000 people in New Orleans didn't have transportation and most likely could not afford to get any. AND they said the Superdome would only be opened as a last resort shelter (in the beginning) because they couldn't put too many people there.
But yes I would have walked, but would I have gotten far enough?

I agree. I dont understand. Im sure they are more used to getting much stronger storms than us, but still! By staying they are putting many people in danger including their own family. I was so surprised to see HOW MANY stayed! I dont think anyone expected it to be as bad though.

since LI is as flat as a pancake, I would leave before the mandatory evacuation.

I don't know where I would go. I have family all over the US but not within reasonable driving distance. Maybe we would go upstate and stay up there for a while.

I would just drive as far as I could

We would pack up both of our cars with family momentos and run upstate to be with my family. Anyone who has no where to go...(Dleeny) come on up...we've got plenty of room up there for you.

I would definitely LEAVE... But a lot of people may feel differently when faced with leaving their home which holds their life savings. I feel I would always be able to rebuild but others aren't as fortunate to think that way...

I agree. i think teh government should ahve acted much ore quickly both in getting people out to begin with and in rescuing people. I understand there's only so much they can do, but a disaster of this magnitude calls for great measures

Nobody really thought it was going to be that bad. I would have left at the mandatory evac.

There were people who were infirmed and couldn't leave. I don't think we should be saying 'I told you so'. We just need to help without judging.

Good question.
