cp0329 - Out of curiousity, is there a map of where that home is in Huntington??

edited to say...nevermind! I found the listing on realtor.com. Now I see why they're asking over $500k, it's right in the village. My FH and I were just discussing the homes that line Heckscher Park. We were just saying that it's too bad the town can't buy them and level them! (Or at least fix 'em up to make them into offices.) It looks so odd with those 4-5 homes lining the park.

Jenny5150 - The homes on 25A? Those are offices...unless you mean north of the park? There are quite a few homes there - but I wouldn't consider them desireable...they're right by NY Ave - it's pretty 'industrial' over there.

Now I've got to see this 'house' in person!!

cp0329, they're on Prime St. (running north off of Main st, opposite Spring St.). They're on the west side of the park, across from the white church.

Jenn
Where are those last few you posted? We saw a few of those splits in Massapequa (the last pick in you first post). They have an interesting lay out. That one must need a ton of work. If the location is good it could be worth looking at.

More Fun:
A 2 bedroom coop in this building is $550K and the monthly maintenance is $893.

Jenn, the houses you posted aren't bad at all IMO..

I was just about to say the same thing Marcella....those don't seem bad and to me worth the price just from those pictures and of course depending on where they are...I thought I was the only one who thought that.

The last house in Jenn's post is a Morton Ranch which are mostly found in Plainview. If that's where it is, then you're paying to live in that school district, which is excellent. Its obviously a trade-off, but when we looked there, most of the houses were over $425 & not much better.

You also have to consider that the low interest rates drives the prices up. People are able to afford to spend more on a house, plus more people are looking to buy now. As interest rates rise, the prices will level off. Some of the asking prices are definitely inflated, but most of the starter houses are pretty much in line with what's out there. You won't get anything decent for less than $325 in most mid Nassau neighborhoods, and the closer you are to the city, the more you pay. It's more convenient & cheaper to commute.

Some of those houses are typical of long island starter homes, again your are paying for the neighborhood and school district. Keep in mind that just because a house has great curb appeal (looks beautiful on the outside) it can be in poor condition on the inside and vice versa.

Imagine if we post a house here and someone sees it that lives there?

Oh, and lets take a vote:

What area on Long Island offers the best in terms of neighborhood, but the worst pieces of sh-it houses for the money?

My vote is Oceanside. They have repeatedly tried to sell me cabins for insane prices.

The houses I posted are in Farmingdale.
I myself, don't know if I would pay that price for those to have to do so much work.

I'd have to see. I think all these homes are complete ripoffs, it's so sad.

$519,000.00 Bayside
2 bedrooms 1.5 baths

Bayside = 25 min on the LIRR to NYC on the Port Washington Line and you always get a seat. NYC taxes probably no more than $3,500.00 if that. Ok public school but tons of access to private.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!

Well thats not bad at all. If that house is 25 minutes into the city I would pay 519k and with the interest rates where they are right now after the downpayment my mortgage would only be about 2k.

I swear it's a no win situation. DH and I want to move back to NY soooooooo bad especially since his family down here has proven to be typical white trash!! But for educations sake there's no way I would send my son to school down here. Florida is where you go to college. not to public school. Not to mention the fact that we have one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the country. (10-14yr old!!) The housing costs down here are great.
We bought our house in an older development but it's in a real good part of town and it's become quite the place for people to buy there first home.
We paid under 100K for our 3 bed 2bth lr/dr/eik and lanai. Our taxes are under $1k a year and so is our monthly mortgage.!! We did have to do minor work. Paint and new carpets but no major renovation at all.
if we stay in florida, We are looking to expand to a 4 bedroom. This is one of the house we're considering.

4 Bedroom / Media / 3 Bath 3495 Sq Ft A/C
225K-329K
Difference being whether you get the corian counters get the upgrades on the pool and split one of the bedrooms in to 2. Giving you 5 bedrooms

We are still toying with the idea. It's a brand new home, and DH loves the media room

but it's so far from our families and friends up north.Looks like we may have shell out the money for private school if we stay But I'm afraid that staying may be our only option.....
