briarrose, beautiful home.
We're going to NorthPort and I agree with you 110% about the education. Its good for college, but public school No way. When we were there last, FI took an exam and scored 100 across the board and the woman said to him 'you should go to college, you're smart' he said I did, I went to a top school in NY. She was amazed. The test had parts that went from 3rd grade up to a 12th grade level and their were people who failed.
I think we're going to send our kids when we have them to private school.

You want to really be sick.... you can buy the house shown as is complyelty furnished for 365K!!! All you have to do is bring in your clothes!!
WiththisRing; It's scary the lack of education down here. I stopped reading the paper, because the reporters are sooooo bad. The articles sound as thought they were written by a 5th grader and there always getting the facts wrong. I dont even watch the news. When the balckout happend a reporter from a local station was doing a story up there, and then the blackout happened, so she talking about what it was like and in the backgound I see a nassau county cop car and she's saying how she was wlecomed into an upstate NY home in Belmore!!! I was like what????? They dont know there geoghraphy!!
The cost of living down here is comparable to salaries. As opposed to NY. Most kids move out the parents house between 16-18. Cause you can get brand new one bedroom apt. with a clubhouse and a pool starting at 345 a month. And to buy a house you can get a house in a good neighborhood starting a 90K a yr. But b/c there are so many senior citiznes who dont want to spend there taxes on education there no money, not enough classrooms or schools.
It's hard to now what to do!!

BR: We were there in June and their was an article about a woman who competed in an ammature boxing championship and she died because she got punched in the head. The article was written so poorly. I couldnt believe that passed for journalism. I couldnt even watch the news because the newscasters seemed like they never passed the 6th grade.
$$$ wise for houses you cant beat. The house we are going to have built you would never find up here. The walk in closets alone could be the size of tiny bedroom.
I have gotten so much of 'you get paid so much less down there' and I tell people 'yea ya do, but with a morgage that is less then what you pay in rent up here, you can live on a cheaper salary.
I cant wait to be down there. I am counting the days

Has anyone found any that they think are priced right in this area? Sometimes they just need new siding or some nice landscaping, but may be great on the inside.
Jenn where was that last one? It looked like a decent size house just needed some cosmetic work from the outside.

that last house posted is an EXCELLENT price if it is in a good neighborhood (and of course isn't a disaster on the inside).

This post really depresses me...I feel like I will be renting for the rest of my life. There is a 2 bedroom co-op in Great Neck we went to look at right by the train 375K. That is for an APARTMENT SO SAD!

Is that a Bungalow?? Remember ladies... NY is the most expensive state in the US to live! It does make me sick to see all those beautiful houses in AZ, TX, and FL.

FH and I are looking for houses in lower Westchester and if you girls think the prices in Nassau are insane, you can't imagine what they are asking for in lower Westchester area. Houses that go for 400-450 range in Nassau County go for 550-600 in lower Westchester!!!!! I am like , and the taxes are higher too!! (avg. about $10,000!!!) but then again it is all location location location. Lower Westchester is 25-30 minutes away from the city.

And this is why we're going to move to NC or SC in the next 5 years.
Actually we're going to purchase land down there (probably NC since there's no zoning laws in SC) and have FH's cousin's boyfriend build us a home. He owns a modular home construction company. The homes are georgeous and sturdy and so affordable. Maston Homes

This cracks me up...not so much the home, but the location: $1,195,000
It's on West Pulaski in a large field with one other home next to it (it looks like something out of the Wizard of Oz, where a home was just dropped in a big field. ) It's Cold Spring Harbor zip code, almost 2 acres & CSH school district (hence the high price), but across the street the homes are getting $350k.
They'll be lucky if they can get $750k for it.

Oh my!! This thread is making me realize just how obscene the prices are getting down on LI. (All my family still lives there) I live in upstate NY right now, and it is CHEAP to live here! I pay $450 a month for rent (2 BR, LARGE apartment). If I really wanted, I could build a gorgeous, HUGE house on over an acre of land for way under 200K. I know this for a fact, because my friend just did it! Isn't it sick how the prices fluctuate depending on the area?
DH and I just bought a house in CT. Most people think it's just as expensive as LI, but there are some beautiful areas where the homes are quite reasonable. We paid $167,000 for a 3 BR 1.5 bath colonial in a great school district, with a larget fenced in yard and a pool. Plus, the house is immaculate inside. I really, really want to live on LI to be close to my family, but there's just no way to afford it!
