Jamie where is that bungelow? That is why you should all move upstate with me . My house is similar to the one Jenny posted for a million and something and we designed it and then had it built...total I guess it cost us less then $200,000 (including 20 acres) with top qualty stuff in side it is 2700 sq feet. We live about a half hour past binghamton.

You guys need to leave New York. I thought I could never leave the city but OMG the LIFE out here is not even comparable, it is so much better!!! I love St. Louis.

I gotta move out of NY but Danielle wont move....So I guess we gttasave like crazy and pray that the houses go down in price...Which I doubt will happen.

I have to show DH these prices! I am begging him to move after he puts his 20 years in at his job in 7 years! (he will qualify for full pension benefits then)
In the meantime we are saving every cent we can while we have cheap rent.

Here is a house in the town in NJ I grew up in -- it is such a great town -- 15 minutes outside Philadelphia! I want to move back there!!
Re: OK just for FUN, post some homes that you are : 0 like what?! They want HOW MUCH?!
wow elle that looks really nice...
I was surprised that rockland is pretty reasonable (my friend just bought there) - but I think b/c it isn't really transit friendly to NYC...
I wish I had moved out of NY to a reasonable area...it seems San Diego has a higher house average than Nassau County at least there are tons of condos and townhouses around...

as for the cheaper homes in other states... can we assume salaries are also lower than NYC? isn't it all relative?

Depends on where you work/live. My friends in florida, bought a brand new 2200 sf. model home. For 220K. The mortgage is 1400 a month. He makes over a 100k a year She makes 40k a yr. There is no state tax on your earnings here only federal, so you take more of what you earn home. So for them it is very cost effective without having to sacrifice, less income.

On page 3 Jennbaby posted a house and said, 'it looks like a trailer, no'. I don't want to start anything but that house kind of looks like the house I just bought in Syosset. It is a ranch built post WWII kind of like the Levit houses.
You have to think aall of this outside of a vacuum. Meaning, we paid $360K for our house. It has 4 bedroom and one bathroom, no basement and no garage. To some, it might seems like #$*& but I was willing to pay for the location. I am going to be sending my daughters to the 60th best high school in the entire nation.
Is it the house of my dreams, No. Not really. Could I have gotten more for my money in Suffolk, Yes, but I work in Brooklyn, my husband works in Queens and with 2 babies on the way we didn't want a huge commute. In a few years with some changes it will be all we want it to be in the neighborhood we wanted to be in.
Just my 2 cents!!

I know you didn't mean anything Jenn. I am just giving another perspective on the whole house buying process. Sometimes what is inside is deceiving based on the looks on the outside as well.
Shamma, shake your head all you want but EVERYONE is allowed an opinion in this environment aren't we?

rlivings - like i posted in the other 'how much for THIS house?'... unless you are serious about buying real estate and know the market and value of land, people haven't a clue. just ignore! homeowners know the deal....

Rlivings - your are not alone in your opinion. thank you for stating it. I felt that way way back on page 3 but wasn't able to express myself as clearly. There is a lot to consider when buying a house not just the picture and the price tag. What seems like a great deal to one is not to another. But if you follow anything about LI real estate - you know what you get for your money. Is it crazy - maybe but it is the fact you have to deal with to live in Nassau and be 30-40 minutes (or maybe less) to NYC (which to me is worth it!). I would really feel bad if someone posted my house and called it a trailer (even not meant to be harmful). But I guess not everyone feels that way.

Re: OK just for FUN, post some homes that you are : 0 like what?! They want HOW MUCH?!
Why would you think I shook my head at your opinion, I shook my head b/c a fun thread was turning in to something other than it was meant for. You are indeed entitled to your opinion, but no one knows where you live or what your home looks like, so there is no need for you to feel like your home is being discussed here.
IMO the way a house looks or how much it cost does not make it a home. I would prefer to live in an apt for the rest of my life where I am happy, than take on the cost of a home where we will be living pay check to pay check and be at a each other's throat and unhappy. I am sure your home is quite lovely, as long as there is love in your home and you are comfortable I could care less what it looks like
JL one does not have to own a home to know 'the deal' People have done their homework and probably aren't ready to make the step towards homeownership, so don't make the grandiose statement that you have to own a home to be in 'the know'. Some of us, if not all, do know why things cost what they do. This is a fun thread. Sticker prices are still shocking, whether or not you own a home.
