Ok, political discussion that might get ugly, but something John Kerry said....

Original post by Misty

...last night on an MTV special about the election reaaaallllly got to me.

MTV had a soldier who just returned from Iraq interviewing the Presidential candidates at different events.

When he got a few minutes with John Kerry, he asked him about a plan he has to insure that 40,000 additional men and women join the armed forces. The soldier asked how he planned to do that without re-instituting a draft and his response went something very close to this:

'Well, I believe that with a responsible foreign policy, we can promise new young people that they won't get deployed every five minutes, and that they won't really have to worry about serving, and this will lead to a greater interest in joining the armed forces and increase our numbers'.

Does this idea frighten the crap out of anyone else? I mean, do we really want soldiers that are worried about getting deployed? Isn't the purpose of our armed forces to be WILLING to fight for us? This seems like a pretty naive idea for a Presidential candidate.

Long story short the quote isn't correct so it is hard to have a political discussion based on it when it isn't totally what he said.

Naturally everyone on this board is different.. be it democratic, republican, indep....

but it is good to hear that everyone agrees that if Kerry did say anything close to what Misty quoted then he definetly has some explaining to do...

sorry - I don't think he needs to explain...

as an ENLISTED sailor...he testified to the Senate in 1971 for Vietnam Veterans against the Vietnam War...

I see this comment no different...He testified that he was given a gun to enforce a foreign policy that made no sense...and he is applying this to the current situation...

I totally agree that the issue of military spending divides republicans and democrats. I just don't think that wanting to cut military spending equates to not supporting the military.

I have to tell you, though, my DH's military family is so ultra-conservative. It makes for interesting discussions sometimes. Me vs the in-laws. Just this past weekend someone unfamiliar with my significantly more left ideals made a comment that caused all of the rest of the heads to turn to me. I just pretended to zip and lock my lips and I looked away.

I don't want to lose friends or in-laws over political debate. It is nice to have this kind of political discussion when it doesn't get ugly.

To my Republican friends. And please pardon my exuberance when the Democrats take the white house back

I think this country needs to get it's spending under control period- after doing some MUCH needed research in macroeconomic policy- I'm swiching parties- good bye my Republican friends- I'm heading to the Democratic side- President Bush is setting this country up for economic ruin and we are too blinded by patriotism to see it.

I dont really think we have to worry about these kinds of comments because I seriously think Bush will win.. and thats not just because I am voting for him

I hope he continues to say stupid crap that way Bush will win by a landslide!!

I highly doubt Bush will win. Democrats are coming together, both conservative and liberal. The economy is in the toilet, and dont forget that Bush took us to war without any real evidence of 'weapons of mass destruction'. Hundreds of American troops are dying in Iraq, and I dont think any of us know why in the hel! they are still there. Look what happened to Bush Sr- he put all his effort on international issues, going to war, no focus on domestic issues. Clinton came in w. a message about focusing on the US domestically, and Bush was gone. Hopefully the same will happen this year.

Edited to add- last election Bush was up against (admittedly) a weak Democratic candidate in Gore. And he lost then too

The fact of the matter is that Bush shouldn't win again- even though I did vote for him in the past- it's his fault we are in the middle of a jobless economic policy.. because he refuses to change his policy that he forumlated in 1999- when things were good- for 2004 when things are still economically unsound..

The bottom line is that all of us- yes, even you who voted for bush will be shouldering the tax burden in this country- because he is pretty much eliminating taxes on all but wages- any other non-earned capital (from investments) will not be taxed- and that means that millionaires will pay NO tax on the tens of thousands of dollars in interest they earn every year... yeah ,OK- THAT'S FAIR.

I'm sorry- but his policies are a slap in the face to decent, hardworking, Americans in this country- he is smashing the tax system as we know it- the system that provided us the surplus that he wasted by handing tax cuts to the rich, and keep us quiet with $150 that did nothing to bolster our sagging economy.

Suzanne, I don't think you want to put your guy up in a saying stupid crap contest. The only person Bush would be able to beat in that contest is Dan Quayle

on a more serious note...lets not forget the conversation Cheney had with O'Neill and Bush...saying that Reagan ran a deficit and look how popular he was!!! Reaganomics cannot work today...there is no more cold war...no matter how hard Bush tries to make one up!!!

I cannot say whether or not Bush will win or not...but I will say that if he does...it will NOT be a landslide...he barely has 50% of the population on his side right now...

AMEN!
I am a registered democrat, and I am NOT unpatriotic or ANTIMILITARY. I just think the whole Iraq thing was wrong. Bush just wanted to get back at Saddam for trying to kill his dad. Yet it was his dad's buddies who gave the weapons to saddam in the first place...to gas IRAN. Remember when our CIA placed leader in Iran got overthrown...???And they started taking hosteges? Thats when Iraq was our buddy.
It sickens me to think our soldiers are dying over there for some political 'get you back'crap. WE gave him those poisions!
PS...all the hijakers came from Saudi Arabia and Egypt...why are we not going after them? Those are the real terrorists. Al Quaeda had no link to Iraq, people still believe that they were linked! They may be there now, B?C it's so unstable.....Bin Laden, Egyptian Hezbola and the Saudi royal family is who we should be focusing on. BUt we are too dependant on oil to go after saudis.

Well I could go on and on. I know that I will not change anyones mind about Bush. But nither can anyone else trick me into not seeing the truth. Just my 2 cents.
After the Janet thing, how could anyone take anything MTV does as serious?
