I'd go with 10-12 different types of candies. If you get too much of a variety it can be overwhelming.

Also, decide what candies first then pick jars appropriate for the candy size/shape.

Re: ok so i guess i am dumb..
I am doing a candy bar and I read that the key to making it successful was to buy 10-15 different candies in bulk. I bought 10 pounds of 12 different types of candy for mine I think. I will have approx. 200 guests as well.
Also, look in BJ's or Costco for candy and compare prices because I did alot better there than on the websites I found online. I also did really good with prices after different holidays because I got them on sale. Be sure to check the expiration. My DOC also suggested I stay away from Twizzlers and stuff like licorice because it tends to get stuck and people have a hard time getting it apart so just to keep in mind to keep the people moving at the table...
Look in ac moore or michaels for jars as well as Marshalls and Home Goods. I have some pics in my album of a few of the jars I got but I have to say the most beautiful jars I got were from Marshalls. I laugh because I have no clue what to do with them after!!!
