Re: ok stupid question...
of course you can. you can do whatever you want.
i think the point of the cocktail hour is to relax between the ceremony and the reception...
a time to take pictures and time to be sure all the guests arrive for the reception...

You can set it up any way you want. I love cocktail hours though! They are always my favorite part of the wedding!

I think it just follows with the tradition of when you have company at your house, you offer them a beverage and perhaps an appetizer when they arrive. You don't usually go straight to the dinner table.

Oh, I thought that it was included in most halls. Usually the cocktail hour is when the bride and groom have their pictures done, it gives the guests something to do while they wait. I think thats why the cocktail hour, not really sure.

Re: ok stupid question...
its like a buffer between the ceremony and the reception... it gets everyone ready to party the night away... its a great start to a reception

Re: ok stupid question...
My entire wedding reception is a cocktail party. Like a 4-hour long cocktail hour, but with slightly more food.
ETA: But with cake at the end

Re: ok stupid question...
Usually it gives the guests a chance to mingle, before the couple can make their appearance later. You don't have to do it. I wnet to one weddign that had it before the ceremony, which was nice , b/c if people were late they jsut missed teh cocatil hur, not the ceremony.
The milleridge has teh option of a 4 hour affair , without a coctail hr, that is less expensive. They say it isn't usually used for wedings, but for other parties, but you coudl do it if you wanted.
