They grind the teeth down. I don't think it hurts, but it will make your original teeth smaller, so if you go to caps you will always need to keep them.

Like a crown to replace a tooth that you had a root canal on? Or the cosmetic caps?

Re: ok tell me about teeth caps...

I had two crowns put on root canal teeth last year, and I'm assuming it's the same thing. I could be wrong. What my dentist did was take out the filling that was in the tooth, then he drilled a little deeper than the hole already was. Then he put this post made of wood, or metal, I don't know, into the hole. It wasn't that big, probably half maybe quarter the width of a pencil. I don't remember if he did everything on one day, or if I had to come back but then he took a mold of my tooth. After the mold, he took a little drill with like a saw on it, and cut the tooth part away, leaving only the post. Then he gave me this fake metal tooth that I had to wear for a week (my crowns are in the back, not sure what they'd do for a front tooth). A week later I came back and he gave me a white porcelin (?) tooth and it blended right in, you can't tell which teeth are fake at all.
It really sounds a lot worse than it is. It didn't hurt at all, and I'm a huge dentist baby. Good luck!

I had to have a root canal in 2000, which the dentist fitted me for a crown, I had to have a temporary put in. When it came time for my permanent crown, he put it in and by the next week I told him I still felt intense pain and I had a bubble on the roof of my mouth (its a top tooth), he gave me a prescription for anitbiotics and said it should go away in a few days. Fast forward 3 YEARS LATER, I am convinced this crown does not fit my mouth, its too small, I keep getting food stuck in between, thus getting more infections, I can feel it moving as well. I just got over an infection and I have an appointment to have it replaced on Sept 8th.

I actually wanted to do this...the cosmetic one. my teeth are in really bad shape (i had an awful orthodontist as a kid) I was wondering if you wouldn't mind posting about it after you have it done. From what I have heard I doesn't hurt. your gums get a little sore, but that's all....I think the worst thing I heard was that it takes a couple of days to get used to the cap itself.

I have two crowns (no root canal).

There were due to the the size of the cavity/filling being so large that the structure of the tooth was in jepoardy.

I wouldn't say they didn't hurt, but it wasn't awful. I HATE the dentist to begin with so I always get the nitrous oxide to distract me.

My gums were definitely sore for a few days (more than a little sore) - a lot worse with one that the other.
