So-- when planning out your budget-- since no matter what, all brides need to live within one..
What was the ONE thing that you just have to have-- and you do not care one bit what the cost is, no matter how obnoxiously ridiculous.

for me, it was my wedding dress. I needed that to be beautiful, and didn't care about the ridiculous $4K I had to shell out

Re: ok- wedding poll type of discussion or something
I mean-- a lot of things cost so much money- but that is weddings in general..
For me, it's hair and make-up. In total-- I am probably dropping what some people spend on their dresses. But, I know I will look freakin' gorgeous- and I am not the type to splurge on myself.
My mom said a while ago that she would take care of all the 'bridal costs'.. I could not even ask her to pay for it cause it's so ridiculous.

Not by choice... I realized I can't care about how much the photographer is because they are all way pricey!!!! Oh well. But so far the thing that I didn't mind 'going over budget' on was the hall.

Photography prices is what I found most interesting-- really, no matter who you look at-- the prices are really all about the same- give or take.

I had to have a location and food that were top - I did not want a hall or hotel...Raphael fit the bill. It is 3/4 of my budget, and I have scrimped and researched and booked only reasonably priced (but good!) vendors to keep the total budget from getting out of control.

Man... this is a tough one. I can't decide. Since FH and I are paying for the entire wedding (with the exception of my dress - mom bought that for me - and I think that if I had to buy it for myself, that would have been my answer)... I would have to say that from the beginning it was the location that was most important... we fell in love with Carlyle and even though I broke down crying at the thought of how much this will cost... we decided it was important to us and it had to be. We agreed to be tight with the budget with everything else.
Next came the photo/video... once again, this is so important. Its the only thing left once the day is done (aside from memories). I cant even tell you how many places we went... all different ranges (low and high) but again... this had to be the most important thing so guess what... splurge again.
So basically... Hall and Photo/Video for me.

I hear ya-- I mean-- luckily we are contributing to the things we really want- but, we do not have to bear the brunt of the total wedding costs-- but, everything is a splurge-- but, whoever said wedding planning was about rational thinking?!!

Photographer, definitely. Though I seem to have fallen into the trap of thinking that EVERYTHING is important and nothing can be skimped on. I might have a problem!

I think I may have the same problem as jenniesunshine!
I have fallen into the trap of thinking that EVERYTHING is important and nothing can be skimped on. And almost everything that I have done so far has been way more $$ than I planned on except photography.
I am staying within my budget, but I am using every last penny!!
One thing I told myself I wouldn't spend money on is my shoes - and everywhere I go - I walk straight over to he Stewart Weitzmans and Vera Wangs....I think I need to be committed!!!

Re: ok- wedding poll type of discussion or something
another photography gal! i spent a lot, but pictures are so very important to me. that was the big splurge. the invitations are $$ too, another biggie for me. we scrimped in transportation, CPs, and have family helping us in a lot of other areas.

Re: ok- wedding poll type of discussion or something
i think ill be spending the most on the hall/ guests but thats not my doing (its FH's huge family thats causing that)
what i plan to spend the most on is my photography- but thats in proportion to my budget which is about 16,000 for FH and I (in laws will pay the rest)

Re: ok- wedding poll type of discussion or something
i would have to save my wedding dress. i planned on spending about $1000 for dress, veil and tiara. i tripled that price, but i HAD to have that dress.
also, the hall. i at first had a total budget of $15,000 for EVERYTHING. well, my hall is costing me that much, but again, i HAD to have it.

Our band- we wanted quality and a horn section plus the ability to play ANYTHING! So even though it is out of line with our budget we paid 6500
