Oliver Stone Question and Poll

Oliver Stone Question and Poll

I just read a blurb that said Oliver Stone is directing a movie about September 11th. It will star Nicolas Cage as a PATH police officer trapped in the rubble.

How do you feel about this?

I don't think there's any getting around people/writers/artists/filmmakers etc exploring the events...IT's an incredible story and some of the greatest films ever have been made of similarly earthshattering events

I read Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close a few weeks ago. It's told from the point of view of a 10 year old boy whose father died on Sept. 11. In was a little unsettling at first, but in the end, I thought it was extremely inspirational.

I'm not sure how I feel about an OS movie with NC in it though...I keep picturing National Treasure I think as long as it's not an over dramatized action flick it could work, but I think it needs to be approached with a certain level of dedication to depicting what actually happened that day and a certain level of sympathy, class and sincerity.

I think it could work if it's handled well (script, casting, etc.) It was inevitable that Hollywood would snatch it up. I can understand that people would be angry to hear about a 9/11 movie, but if it's done well, I don't have a problem with it.

I think it's horrible and awful.
If it has to be done, then it should be done in the future when the generations of people who lived through it, have long since passed on.

I agree... there have been some really amazing plays written (Recent Tragic Events, the Mercy Seat) and movies made (The Boys) in the wake of 9/11. It's not like this is the first time. I too think it's the Stone Factor that squicks me.

I think he's just too trite and exploitative to bring any really weight or insight to a movie like this.

And Nic Cage???

I think it is a really bad idea.
not cause they are making money off something so horrible but.........
It has been so hard for so many people that have lost so many loved ones I dont think it is fair to keep pushing it into their faces.
Maybe it is the way that some people want to remember it but I know others that just want to remember the happy times in their loved ones lives and put that god awful behind them.

What about films like Apocalypse Now - widely regarded as one of the finest war films ever, created in 1979 - just 4 years after the end of the Vietnam War??

Black Hawk Down
The Titanic (not talking Leo either, countless movies have been made about it)
The Killing Fields
The Deer Hunter

etc, etc, etc

ARe all of these films a bad idea as well?

There are so many films that depict harsh times and tragedy, the list would be tremendous. I think OS can do well, but I also think he can be over the top, and NC? I'm not convinced on that one either.

couldn't have said it better myself...there is nothing that people are not going to know about this tradegy that Hollywood needs to inform us about...no one will forget that day...we don't need a movie to mark it for us...

ETA: If a movie is going to be made I agree that it should be made for a newer generation...not the ones that lived through it...its painful enough that we lived through...jmo

I think he might get a lot of backlash on this one... I feel it's too soon.

I have mixed feelings about this one, but I definitely think it is too soon. When I think about some of the films I have seen like Schindler's List, that could be very upsetting, but told an incredible stroy and were done well (IMO), I don't think that films shouldn't be made at all, but I think it is still too soon.

And nicholas Cage? sorry, but no way!

It's not necessarily a film's job to 'mark' something for us or tell us something we didnt' know...there are some extraordinary stories from that day--about both those who perished and those who lived to tell about it--and they can be just as uplifting as tragic. Who will make this movie for future generations? Someone who even alive when it happened? I think that's cashing in on tragedy!

I just feel that it is too soon to be making movies about this...so many people are still greiving from this and are just starting to put their lives together from it...and some who lost a loved one will never be able to have their lives back the way they were...i just feel that no matter how Hollywood tries to defend its self on the making of this movie - there will be people that will see it as a way for the movie to make money on this event...I agree Schindlers List and Apocolypse (sp) Now are great movies of terrible events that happened...but they were made years later after the fact...I don't know...I just feel that when Hollywood gets its hands into something like Sept 11...its more money making than anything else...jmo... shrug

End of Vietnam War = 1975
Apocalypse Now = 1979

Sept 11 attacks = 2001
Potential OS movie = >2005

A LOT more people were affected by the Vietnam War than by Sept 11.

And just for the record, in case anyone thinks I'm being insensitive, I lost a family member and a friend in the attacks.

Like I said...too me its more about the money...that day is still so clear in my mind...that to see this movie as anything more than money making...is hard...

I'm sorry for your loss

Re: Oliver Stone Question and Poll

I don't think I want to see it, but I guess it has to be fair game, since wars are.
I would give it more time though.

I didn't realize Appocolipse now was soo soon after the end of the Vietnam War.

My father was in Viet nam, but he does like to watch all those Viet Nam movies. Peopel cope in differnt ways. I'm not sure how it felt in 1979 though. He had been out for a while though, even thugh the war was still going on , he was there in the 60s.

It was a differnt siutation though.
I think since peopel were so agaisnt the war & when he came back, he had to leave his army years off job applications, that I think he appreciated when people were actually acknowledging it by writing books & movies about it.
